Anyone caught in the chaos of the mad, traffic-infested streets in London as they tried to get home during the strike by RMT tube drivers might realise how important those drivers are in keeping London running smoothly (Report, 8 September). Perhaps it’s worth paying them more and reducing their working hours.
    Dr Alan Lafferty

Regarding the letter on smiling (Letters, 10 September), I am told by my son that no one gives way to another vehicle in the south. While this is possibly a wild generalisation, I find that letting a vehicle into a queue of traffic in front of you changes a stressed face to a smile of thanks.

Recovery from the nauseating effects of nitrous oxide (Letters, 10 September) in our school clinic in Sheffield in the early 1950s was in the hands of the dental nurse: a couple of clips round the ears while in the corridor.

    St Albans
