‘The Last Straw’: T.S.A. Agents Brace for Another D.H.S. Shutdown

After funding for the Department of Homeland Security lapsed on Saturday, Transportation Security Administration employees expressed frustration at being forced to work without pay. Many have barely recovered from last year’s 43-day shutdown and now face the prospect of another period of financial uncertainty.

“People have to put their lives on pause. It’s strenuous at best. At worst, it’s financially crippling.” “The problem for many people is they got to put gas in the car. They have to pay for childcare. They have current expenses that they need to do to get to work, and not having a paycheck coming in at the time you’re working is a problem for many people.” “We’re doing our job at T.S.A. trying to keep the traveling public safe. And I want the people in power to do their job and make the decisions that need to be made.” “The last one was very difficult for many people. They actually set up food shelves in the airport.” “It’s definitely going to be hard on people. It could be the last straw for some folks. Some people said during the last shutdown, if this lasts longer than X amount of days, I’m going to quit.”
