    Full time: Southampton 0-0 Millwall

Late chances for both sides, but it ends goalless at St Mary’s.

    Share

    Full time: QPR 1-2 Norwich

Amadou Mbengue’s strike from distance had the away fans worried, but Norwich hold on for a precious win – and they’re now just a point behind Portsmouth, who sit just outside the relegation zone.

    Share

Tom Ince’s hat-trick sends Watford up to fourth in the table, while Birmingham’s hopes of mounting a promotion push take another big hit.

Jay Fulton’s winner helps Swansea move away from danger and climb above their opponents, who cannot buy a point on the road.

    Share

    Full time: Derby 1-0 Middlesbrough

Boro’s painful goalless run goes on – despite dominating possession, they couldn’t make it count and paid the price as Bobby Clark fired home Derby’s winner.

    Full time: Charlton 1-1 Coventry

Another frustrating afternoon for the leaders as they failed to build on Ellis Simms’ early opener, with the hosts levelling in the second half.

It wasn’t as comfortable as they might have hoped, but Kieran McKenna’s side get the win and are on course to go second in the table.

Goals in League Two: Swindon are two goals to the good against Gillingham, Aaron Drinan netting his 19th goal in all competitions this season. Grimsby have taken a late lead at Fleetwood, in a game I’m calling the Fish Derby.

Bristol Rovers have doubled their lead at Shrewsbury, but the good news for the Shrews is that Newport and Harrogate are both losing. “This seems to be our main tactical plan, banking on the fact that there is someone more rubbish than we are,” notes Jeremy Boyce.

A rare day to savour for Port Vale fans – they lead Blackpool 4-1, Devante Cole getting on the scoresheet. Marcus Browne has sealed victory for Wimbledon at Leyton Orient in a mid-table London derby.

    Share

“Hi Niall, and Happy New Year!” And to you, Simon McMahon. “No games in Scotland today, but this happened eleven years ago on New Year’s Day, and still gives me a warm glow even now.”

    Share

GOAL! Preston 3-0 Sheffield Wed (Dobbin 85′)

Lewis Dobbin finds the top corner to rubber-stamp a welcome home win for Preston, against the Championship’s bottom club.

    Share

Bolton are level at Doncaster, Kyle Dempsey with the goal. In League Two, Barnet lead Crawley 2-1, while Salford are ahead at Barrow through Kelly N’Mai.

    Share

League Two leaders Bromley are 2-0 up at home to Newport through Nicke Kabamba, while the team immediately above them on the league ladder – Port Vale – lead Blackpool 3-1. Cheltenham’s comeback at Crewe hasn’t materialised – the hosts now lead 4-1.

Big saves from Charlton’s Thomas Kaminski to deny Coventry’s Liam Kitching, and from Gavin Bazunu to deny Millwall’s Thierno Ballo in a game of few clear chances at St Mary’s.

GOAL! Swansea 1-0 West Brom (Fulton 74′)

Jay Fulton breaks the deadlock three minutes after coming off the bench to give Swansea a deserved lead – and potentially extend West Brom’s miserable away run of eight straight defeats.

    Share

Ipswich could climb to second today, but they could use a third goal to seal the deal at home to Oxford; it’s still 2-1 at Portman Road. Still goalless at St Mary’s between Southampton and Millwall – the only 0-0 in the Championship, because …

    Share

In League One, Wimbledon now lead at Leyton Orient through Miles Hippolyte, while Peterborough are 2-0 up at lowly Rotherham through Brandon Khela.

    Share

GOAL! Derby 1-0 Middlesbrough (Clark 70′)

It could be a very good day for the chasing pack as Middlesbrough, second before kick-off, fall behind at Derby. Bobby Clark gets the goal, taking his time in the area before slotting into the bottom corner.

    GOAL! Charlton 1-1 Coventry (Rankin-Costello 69′)

A blow for the Championship leaders! Joe Rankin-Costello finishes off a breakaway to level for Charlton after a defensive error.

A bad day for Bradford – the League One promotion chasers are three down at Mansfield, Rhys Oates grabbing his second. Barnsley have equalised at Wigan through Adam Phillips, and in League Two, Cambridge’s Ben Knight almost completes a sensational hat-trick, but his overhead kick clatters the crossbar!

    Share

Jeremy Boyce’s prediction (2.46pm) may be coming true – Fabrizio Cavegn has put Bristol Rovers 1-0 up at Shrewsbury. In League One, Malachi Boateng has levelled for Plymouth at Stevenage – and Lincoln are all square with Huddersfield, Adam Reach bundling home from close range.

    Share

GOAL! Preston 2-0 Sheffield Wed (Osmajic 61′)

Milutin Osmajic, who is back from a nine-game ban for allegedly making racist comments to an opponent, fires in Preston’s second. Amid interest from Celtic, the striker points at his badge and the ground after scoring.

GOAL! Watford 3-0 Birmingham (Ince 60′)

Tom Ince completes his hat-trick – just the second of his career – after a brilliant run from substitute Nestory Irankunda, who then set Ince up to smash home from 12 yards out.

    Share

Back to League One, and Huddersfield lead at Lincoln, Leo Castledine making the breakthrough in a battle of promotion contenders. Port Vale are making their man advantage count – they now lead Blackpool 2-1.

    Share

GOAL! Bristol City 4-0 Portsmouth (Armstrong 59′)

From bad to worse for Pompey, who are caught out trying to play from the back again, allowing Sinclair Armstrong to slot home.

    Share

A worrying injury for Robert Bozenik, who needed oxygen after appearing to dislocate his shoulder. The Stoke scorer was able to walk off the field, and is replaced by Sam Gallagher.

    Share

In League One, Port Vale have levelled against 10-man Blackpool through Jayden Stockley, while Doncaster lead Bolton thanks to Glenn Middleton’s opener.

In League Two, Ben Knight has his second goal for Cambridge, a lovely lob doubling their lead over Walsall. Elsewhere, Swindon are a goal up at home to Gillingha, Ryan Tafazolli heading in from a free kick.

There are four Premier League games coming up later; join Michael Butler for Liverpool v Leeds coverage, kicking off at 5.30pm.

    Share

Contender for name of the day here, as Luther James-Wildin puts Stevenage in front at home to Plymouth. A further blow for Argyle: fellow strugglers Exeter have taken the lead against Luton through Pierce Sweeney – another contender there.

    Updated at 11.12 EST

Coventry have a chance to double their lead at Charlton, but nobody can turn the ball home after a goalmouth scramble.

    Share

GOAL! Bristol City 3-0 Portsmouth (Twine 50′)

It looks like game over at Ashton Gate as Scott Twine extends Bristol City’s lead.

    Share

GOAL! QPR 0-1 Norwich (Sargent 46′)

Josh Sargent heads home from close range to boost relegation-threatened Norwich, who haven’t won in their last 10 away games.

    Second half

We’re under way and there’s an early goal at Loftus Road – butwhichwayhasitgone?!

Half-time reading: Will Magee has recapped Enzo Maresca’s 18-month tenure at Chelsea. It’s surprisingly easy to forget he made them world champions.
