Arne Slot said it was understandable that questions were being asked over his future as Liverpool head coach, but he insisted he retained the support of the club’s hierarchy following another heavy defeat, this time against PSV Eindhoven.

Liverpool fell to a ninth defeat in 12 games, the club’s worst run since being relegated in 1953-54, as they were picked apart by the Eredivisie champions on a punishing night at Anfield. Liverpool last lost three successive games by a three-goal margin or more in December 1953.

“I am feeling safe, I am OK, I have got a lot of support from above,” Slot said. “It would be nice to turn it around and get a victory of course but if you are working as a coach and not doing well then it is normal that questions are asked. I am OK with my position. It is not the first time I’ve been in a difficult position but it is about time that we turned it around.”

Asked to elaborate on his conversations with the Liverpool hierarchy, the head coach said: “We talk a lot. They are helpful to the team and to me and we have those conversations but they don’t call me every single minute of the day to say they trust me. In the normal conversations we have I feel the trust. But I haven’t spoken to them after this game yet so let’s see.”

Slot lamented familiar failings from his Liverpool side in their Champions League defeat, namely missed opportunities and conceding too easily, but the midfielder Curtis Jones was more forthright in his assessment of the club’s predicament.

Jones said: “I don’t have the answers. Honestly, I don’t. I’m saying that to everybody. It’s just unacceptable. I don’t even have to wait to think about it. I’m past being angry inside. I’m at the point now where I just don’t have the words. It’s hard because I’m playing for the team I support. I’m a fan, and I’ve seen this club all my life. In a long, long time, I haven’t experienced a Liverpool team going through a period like this with results like these.

“But we still have that badge on our chest. And until that badge is gone, we’re always going to fight. We’re going to try and get this team back to where it needs to be, show everyone again what this club is about and why people call it the best team in the world. But right now, we’re in the shit and it needs to change.”
