Irish cinematographer Robbie Ryan will be honored by The Hollywood Reporter at this year’s EnergaCamerimage film festival with the inaugural THR Visionary in Cinematography Award.

Ryan is one of the most versatile and acclaimed cinematographers working today. A two-time Oscar nominee for his lensing of Yorgos Lanthimos‘ The Favourite (2018) and Poor Things (2023) — their latest collaboration is the awards-season favorite Bugonia, screening at Camerimage — Ryan’s broad body of work includes several films with Andrea Arnold (American Honey, Fish Tank, Wuthering Heights),Ken Loach (I, Daniel Blake, Sorry We Missed You) and Noah Baumbach (Marriage Story, The Meyerowitz Stories) alongside features by Stephen Frears (Philomena), and Mike Mills (C’mon C’mon).

“Ryan is an outstanding cinematographer, celebrated for his ability to create evocative, emotionally charged imagery that combines naturalism with striking visual artistry,” the festival said in a statement. “His style is characterized by authenticity, an intuitive approach to light, and a unique way of capturing human emotions.”

Ryan is a Camerimage regular and has been honored many times before at the festival, receiving the Audience Award for Best Film and the Golden Frog for C’mon C’mon in 2021, the Bronze Frog for Best Cinematography for Wuthering Heights in 2011, and Bronze Frog for Poor Things in 2023. He also took home the Best Cinematography Award for the music video “Iron Sky” by Paolo Nutini, directed by Daniel Wolfe.

Ryan will receive his award in person during the festival’s opening ceremony in Toruń, Poland on Nov. 15. Camerimage, which runs through Nov. 22, is the world’s leading festival for the celebration of the art of cinematography.
