Starz has canceled its drama series BMF, ending the show after four seasons.
News of the cancellation comes about 2 1/2 months after BMF’s fourth and now final season concluded in mid-August. The show, from Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson’s G-Unit Film and Television and Lionsgate TV, chronicled the rise of Demetrius “Big Meech” Flenory and Terry Flenory, brothers who became leaders of Detroit’s Black Mafia Family (hence the show’s title) in the 1980s and ‘90s.
The writing may have been on the wall for the series, however, as Starz president and CEO Jeffrey Hirsch noted season four’s “underperformance” in a quarterly earnings call a day before the finale (Starz generally keeps its cross-platform viewing data private). Hirsch said the show fell short of advertising exepctations, which “resulted in modest sequential declines in OTT subscribers and revenue.”
BMF stars Demetrius Flenory Jr. and Da’Vinchi as the two brothers, with Flenory playing his father. Russell Hornsby, Michole Briana White, Eric Kofi-Abrefa, Myles Truitt, Steve Harris and La La Anthony also star.
Randy Huggins created the series and executive produced with season four showrunner Heather Zuhlke, Jackson, Anthony Wilson and Anne Clements.
With the cancellation of BMF, the Starz original series roster now features Power spinoffs Raising Kanan and Force, both of which are headed into their final seasons; Outlander (also headed for a final run) and its prequel Blood of My Blood; P-Valley; co-productions Sweetpea and The Couple Next Door; and the upcoming Spartacus: House of Ashur, Fightland and Power: Origins, a prequel series.
