Newsom And Wright Give Diverging Takes on Trump’s Climate Policy
Speaking at The New York Times’s Climate Forward conference, Gov. Gavin Newsom of California slammed President Trump’s comments on climate change at the United Nations, while Energy Secretary Chris Wright said Trump should get the “hero of the climate” award.
“He called climate change the greatest con job ever perpetrated on the world. And he said that the scientific consensus on global warming was created by stupid people. What’s your reaction to that?” I know Chris is coming up next, and he’s well — he’s got to defend himself, not just Trump. What an abomination. What an embarrassment. What a fraud. And I say that as a guy that lives in one of the most crisis-prone states in America, but a state that’s seen lifestyles, places, traditions completely destroyed because of the reality of climate change.” “Would you like to see other countries follow the United States’s lead and also withdraw from Paris?” “That’s their choice, but absolutely, absolutely. Look, this has become a club of people that have lost sight of the interests of their own people. If you guys, and I’m going to suggest, you might five years from now, give President Trump the hero of the climate award. Thank you.” “Thank you very much. I appreciate it.” “Thank you.”
