Brett Okamoto has reported on mixed martial arts and boxing at ESPN since 2010. He has covered all of the biggest events in combat sports during that time, including in-depth interviews and features with names such as Dana White, Khabib Nurmagomedov, Conor McGregor, Nate Diaz, Floyd Mayweather, Manny Pacquiao and Georges St-Pierre. He was also a producer on the 30 for 30 film: “Chuck and Tito,” which looked back at the careers and rivalry of Chuck Liddell and Tito Ortiz. He lives in Las Vegas, and is an avid, below-average golfer in his spare time.

Aljamain Sterling had a sizable obstacle to overcome on Saturday, when what was scheduled to be a featherweight fight against Brian Ortega was shifted to a 153-pound catchweight because Ortega was unable to weigh in at the original 146-pound limit.

For Sterling, that meant the UFC Fight Night co-main event in Shanghai, China, was fought at a full 18 pounds more than the weight he used to have to hit when he was UFC bantamweight champion. But with weight cuts being a persistent problem for Ortega — just last year, his fight with Diego Lopes was canceled because of illness brought on by his cut — perhaps Sterling came in prepared for whatever changes would come.

Sterling certainly looked prepared, dominating the five-round fight from the start. He built a 27-2 edge in significant strikes in Round 1 and maintained control from there to the final horn.

As a result of that performance, Sterling climbs three spots to No. 6 in the latest ESPN featherweight top 10. His move up and Ortega’s move down, along with related shifts by other featherweights, are the only changes to these divisional rankings.

Here are the ESPN pound-for-pound MMA rankings and a list of current UFC champions in all weight classes.

Results are current; rankings as of Aug. 26. To be eligible for the rankings, a fighter must have competed over the past 12 months or must have an upcoming fight booked. Fighters who have been dropped for inactivity can be reinstated only after they compete.
