MGM+ has renewed “The Institute” for Season 2.

The second season will consist of eight episodes. News of the renewal comes just ahead of the show’s Season 1 finale, which is scheduled for Aug. 24.

The series is based on the 2019 novel of the same name by Stephen King. Per MGM+, the show ranks as the network’s best premiere ever. Season one stars Ben Barnes, Mary-Louise Parker, Joe Freeman, Simone Miller, Fionn Laird, Jason Diaz, and Jane Luk.

“Set free but hunted, new dangers await the escapees from the Institute and I can’t wait,” King said in a statement.

The series follows the story of teen genius Luke Ellis (Freeman), who is kidnapped and awakens at The Institute, a facility full of children who all possess unusual abilities. In a nearby town, haunted former police officer Tim Jamieson (Barnes) has come looking to start a new life, but the peace and quiet won’t last.

“’The Institute’ has thrilled audiences with its distinctive storytelling and exceptional performances that expertly bring the singular voice of Stephen King to the screen” said Michael Wright, head of MGM+. “We’re so happy to be able to continue and expand this chilling journey and dive even deeper into the secrets of ‘The Institute’ in season two.”

King serves as an executive producer on the series, with Jack Bender directing and executive producing. Benjamin Cavell is the writer and executive producer. MGM+ Studios produces. The series will premiere exclusively on MGM+ in the U.S., UK, Germany, Italy, Spain, Netherlands, Belgium, Brazil, Mexico, Chile, and Colombia. Amazon MGM Studios Distribution will distribute in all other international territories.

“We’ve been so gratified by the response to our first season, which is a testament to the dedication of our fantastic cast and crew,” said Bender and Cavell. We’re thrilled that Michael Wright and everyone at MGM have enabled us to continue Stephen’s powerful and timely story. From this project’s inception, we’ve felt there would be much more story to tell as our brilliant characters continue to navigate their way through the dangers of the world they’re facing.”
