During the festival, she will also introduce her most recent collaboration with Francis Ford Coppola, <em>Megalopolis<\/em><em>.<\/em>\u00a0<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>\u201cSince making her debut as a costume designer on Stanley Kubrick\u2019s <em>A Clockwork Orange <\/em>(1971), Milena Canonero has produced some of the most visionary costumes in film history and has shaped our collective imagination through the clothes we see on screen, using colorful fabrics and innovative cuts to draw out the essential natures of some of the most recognizable cinematic creations,\u201d Locarno organizers said. \u201cTake the Jazz Age tuxedos and gowns of Francis Ford Coppola\u2019s\u202f<em>The Cotton Club\u202f<\/em>(1984), the pre-revolutionary aristocratic ruffles in Sofia Coppola\u2019s\u202f<em>Marie Antoinette\u202f<\/em>(2006), Tilda Swinton\u2019s elaborate, Klimt-like costumes in Wes Anderson\u2019s\u202f<em>The Grand Budapest Hotel\u202f<\/em>(2014), or the stylish dark looks of Catherine Deneuve and Davie Bowie in Tony Scott\u2019s horror film <em>The Hunger<\/em>\u202f(1983). Or take Warren Beatty\u2019s magnificently colorful <em>Dick Tracy<\/em>\u202f(1990), the memorable outfits of Sidney Pollack\u2019s <em>Out of Africa <\/em>(1986), the western get-ups of Jacques Audiard\u2019s\u202f<em>The Sisters Brothers\u202f<\/em>(2018), the iconic costumes of Kubrick\u2019s <em>The Shining <\/em>(1980)\u2026 Or indeed, most recently, her interpretation of a postmodern Roman style in Francis Ford Coppola\u2019s\u202f<em>Megalopolis<\/em>\u202f(2024) and her sixth collaboration with Wes Anderson on the \u201850s-set spy film <em>The Phoenician Scheme<\/em>\u202f(2025).\u201d \u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>Canonero has won four Academy Awards for best costume design, namely for Kubrick\u2019s <em>Barry Lyndon<\/em> (1975), Hugh Hudson\u2019s <em>Chariots of Fire<\/em> (1981), Sofia Coppola\u2019s <em>Marie Antoinette<\/em>, and Anderson\u2019s <em>The Grand Budapest Hotel<\/em>, along with three BAFTAs, three Costume Designers Guild Awards, the Golden Bear at the Berlinale, and various other honors. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cHer interests and talent extend beyond costumes, having designed the sets as well as costumes for Barbet Schroeder\u2019s <em>Single White Female<\/em> (1992) and Roman Polanski\u2019s stage play of <em>Amadeus<\/em> (1999),\u201d Locarno highlighted. \u201cCanonero has also directed some shorts and commercials.\u201d<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>Locarno\u2019s Vision Award pays tribute to people \u201cwhose creative work has contributed to the renewal of the cinematographic imaginary and over the years has been given to masters of special effects, editors, sound designers, composers, musicians, cinematographers, and multidisciplinary artists.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Giona A. Nazzaro, artistic director of the Locarno Film Festival, lauded Canonero as \u201ca giant of the cinema and art of our times,\u201d adding: \u201cLike a Renaissance artist, she has combined the profound wisdom of craftsmanship with the potential of cinema, thus opening infinite spaces for human imagination and expression.
