{"id":9646,"date":"2025-06-24T11:46:01","date_gmt":"2025-06-24T11:46:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/naijaglobalnews.org\/?p=9646"},"modified":"2025-06-24T11:46:01","modified_gmt":"2025-06-24T11:46:01","slug":"andy-murray-to-be-honoured-with-statue-at-wimbledon-but-not-until-2027-andy-murray","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/naijaglobalnews.org\/?p=9646","title":{"rendered":"Andy Murray to be honoured with statue at Wimbledon \u2013 but not until 2027 | Andy Murray"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Sir Andy Murray will enjoy a permanent legacy at Wimbledon after the All England Club announced they would be unveiling a statue in his honour at the 2027 championships.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Debbie Jevans, the chair of the AELTC, said that the club had been working closely with Murray and his team and would reveal the sculpture at the championship\u2019s 150th anniversary in two years\u2019 time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Murray won the men\u2019s singles twice, in 2013 and 2016, becoming the first British man to win the title in 77 years. He retired last year having also won the 2012 US Open and gold medals at the 2012 and 2016 Olympics.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Speaking to the Performance People podcast, Jevans said the tournament wanted to honour Murray in a similar way to how the French Open had recognised Rafael Nadal, who had a plaque unveiled in Paris this year to celebrate his 14 victories at Roland Garros.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">\u201cWe looked at Rafa Nadal having that sort of plaque unveiled to him at Roland Garros which was all very special,\u201d she said. \u201cWe thought, what do we want for Andy?<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">\u201cWe had a great celebration for Andy when he played his last match, which was on Centre Court. And then when all the old players came and they greeted him and Sue Barker interviewed him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">\u201cSo we did a similar thing for him here last year but we are looking to have a statue of Andy Murray here and we\u2019re working closely with him and his team.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Until now only Fred Perry, who won Wimbledon three times in the 1930s, has had a full-length statue in the grounds of the club.
