Trade unions are expected to make further inroads into big tech companies in the UK after new rights for unions to access workplaces came into force, with Google UK signing an agreement on Monday.<\/p>\n
The Prospect union has reached an agreement with Google to begin organising among about 7,000 workers across its UK operations, including YouTube but\u00a0excluding DeepMind.<\/p>\n
Google DeepMind is expected to strike a separate agreement, with the Communication Workers Union seeking recognition there. The deal follows a similar agreement between Prospect and Meta, which owns Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram and employs about 5,000 people in the UK.<\/p>\n
The agreements will allow unions to communicate with non-unionised workers and encourage them to join.<\/p>\n
The union, which represents more than 160,000 UK workers across several sectors, will now be able to run sessions inside Google\u2019s workplaces, including the flagship headquarters in King\u2019s Cross, London.<\/p>\n
Prospect\u2019s general secretary, Mike Clancy, said: \u201cProspect has been organising tech workers for many years, and this access agreement is a powerful signal of intent that we can successfully negotiate agreements with even the biggest global tech companies.<\/p>\n
\u201cTech workers deserve a stronger voice at work, whether that is over bread-and-butter trade union issues like pay and flexibility, AI deployment or workplace culture. I am pleased that Google has struck this agreement with us, and hope it sends a clear signal to other tech companies that having a relationship with trade unions is the new normal in the sector.\u201d<\/p>\n
He said workers would have a stronger voice as more employees at Google and Meta joined trade unions. \u201cWith our track record of delivering wins for members, I am looking forward to seeing what we can achieve together.\u201d<\/p>\n
Google said it had signed the access agreement to comply with the new UK workplace legislation, although it maintained that it already had good internal employee relations.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis step builds on our established work with internal employee representative groups, allowing us to fulfil these new requirements while preserving the respectful, direct dialogue our culture is built on,\u201d a spokesperson said.<\/p>\n
