Jeffrey Donaldson has been sentenced to 15 years for sexual offences against two women who were children when he abused them, completing what was described as a \u201ccatastrophic descent into disgrace\u201d.<\/p>\n
The sentence at Newry crown court on Thursday sealed the downfall of a former Democratic Unionist party (DUP) leader who once dominated unionism in Northern Ireland.<\/p>\n
Donaldson, 63, was sentenced to 11 years for rape against complainant B and four years for offences against complainant A, to be served consecutively. He is to remain on the sex offender register indefinitely.<\/p>\n
He had reached the \u201cvery height of public office\u201d before a \u201ccatastrophic descent into disgrace\u201d, the judge, Paul Ramsey, said.<\/p>\n
The former Lagan Valley MP had shown no remorse or empathy, said the judge. \u201cThere has not been, and doubtless will not be, one word of regret, apology or shame from this man to at least provide his victims with some crumb of comfort.\u201d<\/p>\n
Ramsey paid tribute to the victims, who were in court. \u201cIt is only through the courage, resourcefulness and determination of two young women that you\u2019ve been brought to justice in respect of the crimes you committed against them when they were children,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
The head of the Public Prosecution Service\u2019s serious crime unit, Catherine Kierans, lauded the victims\u2019 courage in coming forward to seek justice. \u201cJeffrey Donaldson held a prominent public position,\u201d she said. \u201cThis case shows that sexual abuse can be hidden behind a facade of respectability.\u201d<\/p>\n
Donaldson, wearing a blue suit, white shirt and pink tie, showed no emotion and was escorted from the dock by two custody officers. <\/strong>He was returned to Maghaberry prison, where he has been held since his conviction.<\/p>\n He was found guilty in June of 18 counts of sexual abuse including one count of rape, spanning a period from 1985 to 2008. He has denied all wrongdoing and plans to appeal.<\/p>\n Speaking outside court, DCI Leah Crothers of the Police Service of Northern Ireland said Donaldson had manipulated his victims and exploited their trust. Police and the criminal justice system had sent a clear message, she said. \u201cNo one is above the law.\u201d<\/p>\n Statements from the complainants, read by Crothers, detailed enduring trauma. Complainant B said the abuse had taken away her ability to trust people. \u201cI stood up many years ago because for me this is about drawing a line in the sand and knowing that the Donaldsons can no longer hurt anyone else.\u201d<\/p>\n Complainant A said her childhood had been stolen. \u201cI learned to survive by shutting away my emotions, trusting no one and expecting people to hurt me \u2026 I should never have had to become this strong.<\/p>\n \u201cThe last few years have been nothing short of a battle \u2026 But those responsible do not control me now \u2026 The cycle is being broken and it ends with me.\u201d<\/p>\n The DUP said its former leader had committed \u201cvile and disgusting crimes\u201d and expressed sympathy for the complainants. \u201cHe deserves every day of the lengthy prison sentence he has to serve following the guilty verdict for preying on innocent child victims.\u201d<\/p>\n The jury in the four-week trial found that Donaldson\u2019s wife, Eleanor, aided and abetted his offending. The jury heard that Donaldson\u2019s wife witnessed part of the latter incident and walked away.<\/p>\n Complainant A said she was of primary school age when Donaldson began to be \u201cphysical\u201d with her. She recalled waking up in the night with a sexual feeling and having nightmares about \u201cmen doing horrible things to children\u201d.<\/p>\n The trial heard that in the 1990s the victim told a pastor about the abuse, after which Donaldson apologised to her at a Christian centre in County Antrim. Prosecutors also told the jury of a letter Donaldson wrote to Complainant A in 2020 in which he expressed regret for causing \u201churt, pain and distress\u201d and asked forgiveness for his \u201csinful nature\u201d.<\/p>\n At the trial he denied wrongdoing and said the apologies related to other matters.<\/p>\n The prosecutor, Rosemary Walsh, told the trial both victims kept memories \u201clocked away inside\u201d until turning points in adulthood prompted the decision to report the offences to police in 2024.<\/p>\n Until his arrest in March 2024, Donaldson was thought to embody unionist probity. Born into a Presbyterian family in Kilkeel, he married Eleanor in 1987 and served apprenticeships in the Ulster Unionist party before defecting to the DUP in 2004.<\/p>\n Donaldson was knighted for political services in 2016 and became DUP leader in 2021, before resigning in 2024.
