Why are we comparing ages anyway?<\/strong> A new survey has found that 50 is the age at which Brits feel \u201cmost confident and in control of their lives\u201d.<\/p>\n And what <\/strong>source do we have to thank for this?<\/strong> British Gas commissioned the survey of 2,000 British adults.<\/p>\n Getting the boiler serviced is one way to feel like a grown<\/strong>up, I suppose. <\/strong>The survey found that recycling, putting clothes away and knowing when bin day is were widely-agreed-upon indicators that someone had \u201cgot it together\u201d.<\/p>\n What\u2019s wrong with a chairdrobe? It\u2019s a perfectly workable system!<\/strong> It\u2019s a pile of clothes, is what it is. <\/strong>Respondents also said that having a litter-free car, spare batteries to hand and washing up after a dinner party, instead of leaving it till the next day, were signs of adulthood.<\/p>\n I knew I was right to buy that bulk pack of <\/strong> triple As.<\/strong> It\u2019s when you\u2019ve got a spare CR2032 battery that you know you\u2019re really nailing it.<\/p>\n These do seem somewhat low or arbitrary bars for having your life together<\/strong>. <\/strong>Oh, so you want to hold people to owning a car, or buying a house, or becoming a parent? Not in this economy.<\/p>\n True. But surely there are more meaningful markers of maturity than making your bed, or drinking two litres of water <\/strong> a day?<\/strong> As if you do either every<\/em> day. You\u2019re right, though: the top-rated sign you\u2019ve got your life under control was making regular savings.<\/p>\n Surely it\u2019s what\u2019s on the inside that counts for adulthood, not what\u2019s in<\/strong> your bank account. <\/strong>The next top indicators were enjoying your own company, admitting when you\u2019re wrong and saying no to things you don\u2019t want to do.<\/p>\n OK, those are way tougher than knowing when bin day is.<\/strong> It does get confusing around the bank holidays \u2026<\/p>\n You\u2019re telling me that you have to be <\/strong>50 to be on top of all this? <\/strong>That\u2019s the average age respondents felt most in control of their lives. But 30% said they felt nowhere near being sorted, while 56% thought no one ever really is.<\/p>\n Didn\u2019t we only just discover that the brain doesn\u2019t reach adulthood until age 32, anyway? <\/strong>Yes, that was a Cambridge University finding last year, and probably more credible than this consumer research.<\/p>\n So, if you think about it, by 50 you\u2019ve only been a grown<\/strong>up for 18 years. <\/strong>Long enough to know to make your bed.<\/p>\n Do say: <\/strong>\u201cActually, drinking two litres of water a day is excessive for most people.\u201d<\/p>\n Don\u2019t say:<\/strong> \u201cIs it bin day?\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Name: 50 (and thriving).
