The US Food and Drug \u2060Administration said on Sunday that laboratory experts re-checked lettuce sample results from Taylor Farms in an \u2060investigation into an \u2060outbreak of the \u200bcyclospora parasite and concluded the finding should be considered a false positive.<\/p>\n
As of Sunday, there were \u2060no confirmed positive sample results for cyclospora, the FDA added. The FDA on Saturday had said that a \u2060sample of shredded iceberg lettuce supplied by Taylor Farms tested positive \u200bfor the parasitic illness that has \u200csickened thousands of \u200cpeople in the US.<\/p>\n
A spokesperson for Taylor Fresh Foods told Reuters \u200cthat the company was informed the FDA made a mistake.<\/p>\n
\u201cTo be clear, at this moment, FDA has not identified a single positive product test result for cyclospora,\u201d the company said. Taylor Fresh Foods added that it had completed a voluntary recall of iceberg lettuce \u200cfrom central Mexico out of an abundance of caution based on the initial information given.<\/p>\n
The FDA, in \u200bits latest update said it has \u201cnotified Taylor Farms and continues working with the firm to ensure the product implicated in this outbreak has been removed from the market\u201d.<\/p>\n
Taylor Farms has also said that the FDA apologized. The company had earlier confirmed that \u2060the product was not part of its current recall, according \u200bto the \u200bFDA.<\/p>\n
Cyclosporiasis, which has been linked \u200bto shredded iceberg lettuce served at Yum Brands Taco \u200bBell restaurants \u200cin Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, \u200bOhio and \u200bWest Virginia has so far resulted in around 100 hospitalizations and no deaths, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).<\/p>\n
The parasitic infection is caused by the single-cell protozoa cyclospora. The microbe is typically transmitted through water or food contaminated with feces. It is most common during warm weather months, from May to August.<\/p>\n
