{"id":50657,"date":"2026-06-25T16:01:59","date_gmt":"2026-06-25T16:01:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/naijaglobalnews.org\/?p=50657"},"modified":"2026-06-25T16:01:59","modified_gmt":"2026-06-25T16:01:59","slug":"perpetrators-of-lgbtq-conversion-practices-could-face-prison-under-new-bill-lgbtq-rights","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/naijaglobalnews.org\/?p=50657","title":{"rendered":"Perpetrators of LGBTQ+ conversion practices could face prison under new bill | LGBTQ+ rights"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Perpetrators of \u201cconversion therapy\u201d against LGBTQ+ people could face up to five years in prison under proposals hailed as a \u201chistoric and long overdue\u201d milestone by campaigners.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">The government has published its draft conversion practices bill, which would ban abusive practices that aim to change someone\u2019s sexual orientation or gender identity in England and Wales.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">People found guilty of such abuse could face an unlimited fine and up to five years in prison.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Simon Blake, the CEO of Stonewall, said it was a \u201chistoric and long overdue step forward on the journey towards LGBTQ+ equality\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">He said: \u201cLGBTQ+ people are not broken or in need of \u2018fixing\u2019. At a time when we\u2019re seeing increased hostility towards the LGBTQ+ community, this draft bill is crucial in creating a safer and more inclusive future<em>.\u201d <\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">It has been eight years since Theresa May first vowed to introduce anti-conversion practice legislation, but progress has been hampered by political dispute and U-turns.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Boris Johnson\u2019s government planned to scrap the ban entirely, before announcing it would go ahead with only sexual orientation \u2013 not gender identity \u2013 included. I did, thankfully. I consider myself one of the lucky ones.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cA ban sends a really clear signal. Anyone who is currently experiencing this, anyone who has, they\u2019re hearing from the highest point that this is wrong and that it should not be happening to you. You\u2019re not broken, you don\u2019t need to be cured.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Galop, the anti-LGBT abuse charity, said it had identified 371 cases involving conversion practices between 2022 and 2025.
