CBS News\u2019 parent company, Paramount, is standing by CBS News\u2019 editor in chief, Bari Weiss, amid a torrent of controversies and lagging ratings on some programs.<\/p>\n
The network released a statement supporting her after a report that senior leadership at the company has discussed changing Weiss\u2019s role to lessen her oversight of CBS News \u2013 and, potentially, CNN, if the company\u2019s acquisition of Warner Bros Discovery receives government approval.<\/p>\n
\u201cBari has the full support of Paramount and David Ellison as the editorial leader overseeing CBS News and 60 Minutes,\u201d a Paramount spokesperson said. \u201cReports suggesting otherwise are inaccurate.\u201d<\/p>\n
Weiss had no experience working in television when she was given oversight of CBS News\u2019 editorial operations after David Ellison bought her digital site, the Free Press, for a reported $150m.<\/p>\n
On Monday, Puck\u2019s Dylan Byers reported \u201cmembers of the senior leadership team have had informal discussions about changing Bari\u2019s mandate at CBS News \u2013 and, eventually, CNN \u2013 in ways that would give her less control over the linear product\u201d. Instead, Weiss would shift \u201cher focus to the news division\u2019s digital growth while maintaining broad editorial influence across all the company\u2019s platforms\u201d.<\/p>\n
The report came amid fears that Weiss is planning to drastically retool the network\u2019s most successful show, 60 Minutes, with insiders expressing fear that the show\u2019s hallowed standing \u2013 and boffo ratings \u2013 could be put in jeopardy. The show has already lost one correspondent, Anderson Cooper, and is widely expected to cut ties with 60 Minutes veteran Sharyn Alfonsi, meaning that the show\u2019s cast will look quite different when it returns for a 59th season this fall.<\/p>\n
A CBS News staffer who spoke with the Guardian expressed skepticism about the report, suggesting that Weiss would probably need a few more stumbles before any change was made.<\/p>\n
Puck\u2019s reporting suggested that Paramount could bring in an executive to oversee CBS News and, potentially, CNN. Currently, Weiss is partnered with Tom Cibrowski, who serves as president of CBS News. It was unclear whether CNN\u2019s chief executive, Mark Thompson, would remain with the company in the event that the merger was approved.<\/p>\n
One of Weiss\u2019s top priorities upon joining CBS News was revamping the network\u2019s evening news show, but the show\u2019s ratings have badly struggled.<\/p>\n
For the last five weeks, the show has averaged fewer than 4 million total viewers per night, and it is trending toward its second-lowest audience this century.
