Former provost of Din\u00e9 College Alysa Landry says she was dismissed by the tribal college for not being Navajo.<\/p>\n
The college\u2019s new president, Deborah Jackson-Dennison, sent Landry a termination letter on March 19, within three weeks of stepping into the role, Navajo Times <\/em>reported.<\/p>\n \u201cI take this action to replace you with a qualified Navajo individual, again, of my choosing and who will reflect my management leadership approach,\u201d read the letter as cited by Navajo Times<\/em>. The letter makes no mention of misconduct or performance issues. \u00a0<\/p>\n Landry joined the college as an assistant professor of English and creative writing in 2019 and has served as provost since June 2023, starting on an interim basis and becoming the permanent provost in September 2024.<\/p>\n She told Navajo Times <\/em>that she isn\u2019t against college leaders preferring to hire Navajo candidates. But because Din\u00e9 College doesn\u2019t allow firing without cause, \u201cthe community assumed it was for cause and began spreading rumors,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n \u201cI want Dr. Dennison to set the record straight,\u201d Landry said. \u201cShe fired me for being white.\u201d<\/p>\n Chris Burnside, marketing and communications manager at the college, told Inside Higher Ed<\/em> he\u2019s unable to comment, as the issue \u201cseems to fall within the scope of Human Resources, who may not be in a position to address it at this time.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Former provost of Din\u00e9 College Alysa Landry says she was dismissed by the tribal college for not being Navajo.
