The National Institutes of Health will no longer recognize a union of early-career researchers who work in its labs, NOTUS<\/em> reported. <\/p>\n NIH fellows\u2014who typically receive term-limited grants\u2014\u201care not \u2018employees\u2019\u201d and are not \u201cemployed in an agency,\u201d read the email the NIH sent to leaders of the NIH Fellows United-UAW union earlier this week. \u201cThe NIH\/UAW bargaining unit should never have been certified.\u201d <\/p>\n The email went on to say that the NIH \u201cwill also file a petition\u201d with the Federal Labor Relations Authority, NOTUS<\/em> reported, suggesting the FLRA had not yet authorized the union\u2019s decertification.<\/p>\n The union formed in early 2024, following a spate of labor organizing efforts at universities across the country. It represents about 5,000 fellows \u201cat the postbaccalaureate, predoctoral, and postdoctoral career stages who do essential work for NIH\u2019s mission,\u201d according to its website.<\/p>\n Union leaders called the NIH\u2019s move \u201cpart of a coordinated effort by the current administration to dismantle federal worker protections\u201d in an email they sent to members. \u201cOur contract is still in effect, and management\u2019s attempt to evade the contract is against the law.
