Are you stupid?\u2019\u201d, the doula said. \u201cNow, how can you accept care from somebody who is so dismissive of you, and who talks down to you, and is so condescending?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In another case, a family member described feeling that the staff were incredibly dismissive of their family after baby loss. \u201cThey just wanted to get rid of us and nobody really took that time to give us that care really,\u201d they said. \u201cThen as we were leaving, we were told, \u2018Make sure you cover his face because you don\u2019t want to upset anybody.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-spacefinder-role=\"nested\" class=\"dcr-566m6o\">\n<h2 id=\"black-and-asian-women-facing-racism-by-staff\" class=\"dcr-bry4uv\"><span class=\"dcr-1378exm\">2. <\/span>Black and Asian women facing racism by staff<\/h2>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The investigation found numerous incidents of shocking systemic and interpersonal racism directed at black and Asian women within maternity and neonatal care.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In some instances, Asian women were stereotyped as \u201cprincesses\u201d, implying that they were unable to cope with pain and excessively demanding. One community organisation told the investigation that they had heard a hospital staff member say: \u201cThe bloody Asian ones just go on and on and on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">By contrast, black women were described as having \u201ctough skin\u201d and being able to tolerate excessive pain, while being stereotyped as angry or aggressive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">During an evidence panel as part of the investigation, one woman said: \u201cI was begging for help \u2026 I was made to feel like I was that aggressive, angry black woman. But that isn\u2019t me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Another added: \u201cI feel like, for us black ladies, they feel like we can handle the pain, even when we are complaining we are in pain.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-spacefinder-role=\"nested\" class=\"dcr-566m6o\">\n<h2 id=\"lack-of-accountability-by-nhs-trusts-in-the-aftermath-of-serious-incidents\" class=\"dcr-bry4uv\"><span class=\"dcr-1378exm\">3. <\/span>Lack of accountability by NHS trusts in the aftermath of serious incidents<\/h2>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Many families told the investigation that they experienced a brazen lack of transparency, as well as \u201ccover-ups\u201d and defensiveness from NHS trusts in the aftermath of birth trauma and baby loss.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In one instance, one family member said that when they requested their medical notes in paper format, what they received did not match what had been sent electronically previously. \u201cSo I can see the amendments made, there is a lot that are redacted,\u201d they added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Another said: \u201c[The trust] magically handed my solicitors magical notes that reappeared out of nowhere after three years\u201d, which they knew to be inaccurate.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-spacefinder-role=\"nested\" class=\"dcr-566m6o\">\n<h2 id=\"inadequate-staffing-and-resources-at-every-level-of-maternity-care\" class=\"dcr-bry4uv\"><span class=\"dcr-1378exm\">4. <\/span>Inadequate staffing and resources at every level of maternity care<\/h2>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Maternity staff were found to have been consistently overstretched by their demanding workload, often having to juggle multiple tasks to compensate for staff shortages.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">One midwife told the investigation that they were called into a busy delivery suite because it had \u201cgone bonkers\u201d, despite it not being their familiar area. \u201cSo we are half the time having to ask people what to do,\u201d they said. \u201cWe\u2019re not providing the same service that the delivery suite midwives can do because they know it like the back of their hands.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Midwives also expressed \u201cembarrassment\u201d at their profession as a result of public scrutiny and criticism experienced, while others struggled with burnout.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Maternity rooms were also frequently seen to be out of action due to leaking roofs and fire hazards, the investigation found, with staff often having to deal with basic repairs which delayed time they could have spent on delivering care.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The report highlighted \u201cunacceptable\u201d instances occurring where staff made cruel or insensitive comments to families when they were most vulnerable, including after baby loss.
