{"id":42673,"date":"2026-01-25T06:46:44","date_gmt":"2026-01-25T06:46:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/naijaglobalnews.org\/?p=42673"},"modified":"2026-01-25T06:46:44","modified_gmt":"2026-01-25T06:46:44","slug":"teaching-students-agency-in-the-age-of-ai","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/naijaglobalnews.org\/?p=42673","title":{"rendered":"Teaching Students Agency in the Age of AI"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Students have little opportunity to practice agency when an LMS tracks their assignments, they\u2019re not encouraged to explore different majors and colleges shrink general education requirements, according to writer and educator John Warner. <\/p>\n<p>In the latest episode of The Key, <em>Inside Higher Ed<\/em>\u2019s news and analysis podcast, Warner tells <em>IHE<\/em>\u2019s editor in chief, Sara Custer, that colleges should refocus on teaching students how to learn and grow. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cAgency writ large is the thing we need to survive as people\u00a0\u2026 but it\u2019s also a fundamental part of learning, particularly writing.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Warner argues that with the arrival of AI, helping students develop agency is even more of an imperative for higher education institutions. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cAI is a homework machine\u00a0\u2026 Our response cannot be \u2018you\u2019re just going to make this thing using AI now,\u2019\u201d Warner said. \u201cMore importantly than this is not learning anything, it is a failure to confront [the question]: What do we, as humans, do now with this technology?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Warner also shares what he\u2019s learned from consulting and speaking about teaching and AI at campuses across the country.
