{"id":42659,"date":"2026-01-25T01:58:48","date_gmt":"2026-01-25T01:58:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/naijaglobalnews.org\/?p=42659"},"modified":"2026-01-25T01:58:48","modified_gmt":"2026-01-25T01:58:48","slug":"trump-lavishes-praise-on-uk-troops-amid-anger-over-his-afghanistan-claims-taliban-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/naijaglobalnews.org\/?p=42659","title":{"rendered":"Trump lavishes praise on UK troops amid anger over his Afghanistan claims | Taliban News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__subhead\"><em>Trump\u2019s praise comes after UK prime minister called the US leader\u2019s remarks \u2018insulting\u2019 and suggested he apologise.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"screen-reader-text\">Published On 24 Jan 2026<\/span><span aria-hidden=\"true\">24 Jan 2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Click here to share on social media<\/p>\n<p>share2<\/p>\n<p class=\"rich-share__social-text\">Share<\/p>\n<p>United States President Donald Trump has praised UK soldiers a day after receiving a rare rebuke from United Kingdom Prime Minister Keir Starmer over comments he made about European troops staying \u201ca little off the front lines\u201d in the war in Afghanistan.<\/p>\n<p>In an apparent bid to ease tensions with Starmer, Trump took to social media on Saturday to acknowledge that 457 UK soldiers had died in Afghanistan, with many others badly wounded, describing them as being \u201camong the greatest of all warriors\u201d.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"more-on__heading\">Recommended Stories <\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"screen-reader-text\">list of 3 items<\/span><span class=\"screen-reader-text\">end of list<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe GREAT and very BRAVE soldiers of the United Kingdom will always be with the United States of America!\u201d he wrote. \u201cIt\u2019s a bond too strong to ever be broken.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Starmer said on Friday that Trump\u2019s comments to US broadcaster Fox News on the margins of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, were \u201cinsulting and, frankly, appalling\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Asked whether he would demand an apology from Trump, Starmer said, \u201cIf I had misspoken in that way or said those words, I would certainly apologise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While Trump\u2019s response stopped short of an apology, his olive branch came after he spoke to the UK leader earlier on Saturday, according to a statement from Starmer\u2019s office.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe prime minister raised the brave and heroic British and American soldiers who fought side by side in Afghanistan, many of whom never returned home,\u201d the statement said. \u201cWe must never forget their sacrifice, he said.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>King Charles\u2019s younger son, Prince Harry, who served two tours in Afghanistan, also weighed in on Friday, saying the \u201csacrifices\u201d of UK soldiers during the war \u201cdeserve to be spoken about truthfully and with respect\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The UK was not the only NATO ally to express anger at Trump\u2019s remarks. Other European leaders, including Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and French President Emmanuel Macron, reacted sharply on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>Alongside the US and UK forces were troops from dozens of countries, including from NATO, whose\u00a0collective security clause, Article 5, had been triggered for the first time after the attacks on New York and Washington in September 2001.<\/p>\n<p>More than 150 Canadians were killed in Afghanistan, along with 90 French service personnel and dozens from Germany, Italy, Denmark and other countries.<\/p>\n<p>The US reportedly lost more than 2,400 soldiers.<\/p>\n<p>At least 46,319 Afghan civilians died as a direct result of the 2001 invasion, according to a 2021 estimate by Brown University\u2019s Costs of War project.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Trump\u2019s praise comes after UK prime minister called the US leader\u2019s remarks \u2018insulting\u2019 and suggested he apologise.
