{"id":41745,"date":"2026-01-15T14:07:44","date_gmt":"2026-01-15T14:07:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/naijaglobalnews.org\/?p=41745"},"modified":"2026-01-15T14:07:44","modified_gmt":"2026-01-15T14:07:44","slug":"spains-meteorologists-subjected-to-alarming-rise-in-hate-speech-minister-warns-spain","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/naijaglobalnews.org\/?p=41745","title":{"rendered":"Spain\u2019s meteorologists subjected to \u2018alarming\u2019 rise in hate speech, minister warns | Spain"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Spain\u2019s environment minister has written to prosecutors to warn of \u201can alarming increase\u201d in hate speech and social media attacks directed against climate science communicators, meteorologists and researchers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In a letter sent to hate crimes prosecutors on Wednesday, Sara Aagesen said a number of recent reports examined by the ministry had detected a \u201csignificant increase\u201d in the hostile language that climate experts are subjected to on digital platforms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The minister said one study had found that 17.6% of those hostile messages posted on the social media network X included \u201chate speech, personal attacks and denigration directed at professionals who work to share correct and verified scientific information\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Aagesen, who is also one of Spain\u2019s three deputy prime ministers, said the research revealed \u201ca surge in the intensity, frequency and violence of the attacks, which affect both meteorologists and other scientific communication professionals\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Aagesen said she was drawing the matter to prosecutors\u2019 attention because of the \u201csocially important role that these professionals play in the fight against climate disinformation\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">One study into the hate speech directed at Spain\u2019s state meteorological office, Aemet, found that such attacks affected public perceptions of meteorology and had a direct impact on scientific work.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cSocial pressure and smear campaigns can discourage scientists from interacting with the public or even communicating their research openly,\u201d said the researchers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThis chilling effect can limit the advance of scientific knowledge and restrict public access to accurate and high\u2010quality information. In addition, the spread of conspiracy theories about climate control and weather manipulation directly affects the perception of the current climate alert. Denial that extreme weather events are a result of global warming finds support in these theories, undermining global efforts to mitigate and respond to climate change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Another study from 2024 found that climate emergency denialism was especially prevalent on X, with denialism identified in 49.1% of posts and climate-related hate speech in 17.6% of posts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Rub\u00e9n del Campo, a spokesperson for Aemet, told El Pa\u00eds: \u201cAlthough I know that my job means I get a lot of exposure, when you see messages attacking you and using your photo \u2013 often for made-up stuff you\u2019ve never said \u2013 you feel bad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">At the end of her letter, Aagesen told prosecutors that the ministry was prepared to \u201chelp them in any way they may deem appropriate\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">X was approached for comment.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Spain\u2019s environment minister has written to prosecutors to warn of \u201can alarming increase\u201d in hate speech and social media attacks directed against climate science communicators, meteorologists and researchers.
