A former Royal Marine is starting a 21-year jail term for mowing down dozens of Liverpool football fans in a \u201ctruly shocking\u201d act that \u201cdefies ordinary understanding\u201d.<\/p>\n
Paul Doyle, 54, bowed his head as he was sentenced at Liverpool crown court where victims and their families watched, some in tears, from the public gallery.<\/p>\n
Judge Menary said Doyle had caused \u201chorror and devastation on a scale not previously experienced by this court\u201d.<\/p>\n
Merseyside police said it was a \u201cmiracle\u201d that no one was killed when the father of three used his vehicle \u201cas a weapon\u201d in a moment of rage at a victory parade in the city on 26 May.<\/p>\n

Some suffered life-changing injuries and many were left traumatised \u2013 including a survivor of the Manchester Arena attack and a woman who fled the war in Ukraine.<\/p>\n Doyle, from Aintree in Liverpool, told police he acted in a \u201cblind panic\u201d and claimed he feared for his life after seeing a fan with a knife. This was disproved by detectives. He pleaded guilty on the first day of his trial last month to 31 offences against 21 adults and eight children.<\/p>\n Sentencing Doyle to 21 years and six months in prison, Menary said: \u201cYou struck people head on, knocked others on to the bonnet, crushed prams and forced others to scatter in terror. You ploughed on at speed, violently knocking people aside or running over them, person after person after person.\u201d<\/p>\n Menary said dashcam footage from Doyle\u2019s vehicle showed he was not acting in fear or panic, as he claimed, but out of \u201can inexplicable and undiluted fury\u201d.<\/p>\n <\/span>Footage shows Paul Doyle driving dangerously before reaching city centre \u2013 video<\/span><\/p>\n His \u201cdisregard for human life defies ordinary understanding,\u201d Menary said, adding: \u201cIt is almost impossible to comprehend how any right thinking person could act as you did.\u201d<\/p>\n There was no reaction from the defendant, who had sobbed for much of the two-day hearing, as he was taken to the court cells by prison officers.<\/p>\n It can now be revealed that Doyle had a string of convictions in the early 1990s \u2013 including one for biting off a man\u2019s ear in a pub brawl \u2013 but that he had not been in trouble with the police for 30 years until he was arrested at the parade.<\/p>\n A former Royal Marine who served alongside Doyle told the Guardian he was well known at the time for his explosive outbursts. \u201cIt was like he was on a tripwire,\u201d the former marine said. \u201cEveryone would say: \u2018He\u2019s got a horrendous flash to bang\u2019 \u2013 meaning the point you get annoyed to the point you\u2019re punching people is zero time.\u201d<\/p>\n Doyle could be heard on dashcam video <\/strong>shouting \u201cfuck\u2019s sake move! Get out my fucking way!\u201d before ploughing into screaming fans. A police officer described the noise as \u201csickening\u201d.<\/p>\n As bodies lay on the ground, Doyle\u2019s rampage was brought to a halt by a former soldier, Dan Barr, who climbed into a rear passenger seat and held the car\u2019s gear selector in \u201cpark\u201d. Even then, Doyle kept his foot on the accelerator, the court heard.<\/p>\n When Doyle was dragged into a police van through a swarm of angry fans, he told officers: \u201cI\u2019ve just ruined my family\u2019s life.\u201d<\/p>\n The court heard on Tuesday that those struck by Doyle\u2019s car were aged from six months to 77 years.<\/p>\n Francesca Massey, 24, said the parade had \u201creopened emotional wounds\u201d and brought back vivid memories of being caught up in the Manchester Arena terror attack in 2017: \u201cThe same overwhelming fear, the moment of stillness before chaos and the desperate rush to escape with the crowd of innocent people around me.\u201d<\/p>\n She added: \u201cThis is something I felt I had overcome over the past eight years, and now I feel like I have been set back again, as it reawakened previous trauma.\u201d<\/p>\n Simon Csoka KC, defending, said Doyle was \u201chorrified by what he did\u201d: \u201cHe\u2019s remorseful, ashamed and deeply sorry for all those who were hurt and suffered.
