Campbell\u2019s has dismissed an executive who allegedly referred to the soup company\u2019s products as being made for \u201cpoor people\u201d and denigrated its Indian employees.<\/p>\n
Martin Bally, who was the vice-president of Campbell\u2019s information technology department, was recorded making the alleged comments by another employee.<\/p>\n
Campbell\u2019s \u2013 which started producing canned condensed soup in 1897, and whose cans feature in some of Andy Warhol\u2019s best-known 1960s pop artworks \u2013 said it had reviewed the recording and believed the voice to belong to Bally.<\/p>\n
Campbell\u2019s made \u201chighly processed food\u201d and \u201cshit for fucking poor people\u201d, Bally reportedly told a former employee, Robert Garza, according to a wrongful termination lawsuit filed by Garza.<\/p>\n
In an hour-long rant, broadcast by a Michigan TV station, Bally goes on to say: \u201cWho buys our shit? I don\u2019t buy Campbell\u2019s products barely any more. It\u2019s not healthy now that I know what the fuck\u2019s in it \u2026 bioengineered meat.<\/p>\n
\u201cI don\u2019t wanna eat a piece of chicken that came from a 3D printer.\u201d<\/p>\n
Allegedly referring to Campbell\u2019s employees of Indian heritage, Bally said: \u201cFucking Indians don\u2019t know a fucking thing \u2026 Like they couldn\u2019t think for their fucking selves.\u201d<\/p>\n
Garza, who was a security analyst at Campbell\u2019s, told a local news outlet he recorded Bally when he met him to discuss his salary and felt something was not right. He is now suing the company for unfair dismissal and is alleging that Bally made racist remarks, admitted to being under the influence of drugs at work, and retaliated when Garza tried to make a complaint about him.<\/p>\n
Campbell\u2019s \u2013 which rebranded last year, dropping \u201csoup\u201d from its name to reflect a move to selling more snack foods \u2013 apologised for the \u201churt\u201d caused by Bally\u2019s comments, which it described as \u201cvulgar, offensive and false\u201d.<\/p>\n
In a statement, Campbell\u2019s said Bally had been dismissed, adding: \u201cThis behaviour does not reflect our values and the culture of our company, and we will not tolerate that kind of language under any circumstances.\u201d<\/p>\n
Campbell\u2019s dismissed Bally\u2019s allegation that the chicken used in its soups was \u201cbioengineered\u201d, calling the comments about its food \u201cnot only inaccurate \u2013 they are patently absurd\u201d.<\/p>\n
