{"id":35112,"date":"2025-11-25T05:53:35","date_gmt":"2025-11-25T05:53:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/naijaglobalnews.org\/?p=35112"},"modified":"2025-11-25T05:53:35","modified_gmt":"2025-11-25T05:53:35","slug":"us-senators-call-for-investigation-of-scam-ads-on-facebook-and-instagram-us-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/naijaglobalnews.org\/?p=35112","title":{"rendered":"US senators call for investigation of scam ads on Facebook and Instagram | US news"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">US senators Josh Hawley and Richard Blumenthal have asked the heads of the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to investigate revenue from ads on Facebook and Instagram that promote scams and banned goods.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThe FTC and SEC should immediately open investigations and, if the reporting is accurate, pursue vigorous enforcement action where appropriate\u201d to force Meta to disgorge profits, pay penalties and agree to cease running such advertisements, Hawley and Blumenthal wrote in a letter to the federal agencies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Earlier this month, Reuters reported that internal documents from late 2024 stated that that year Meta was projected to earn about 10% of its overall annual revenue \u2013 about $16bn \u2013 from illicit advertising. One document noted Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram, earns $3.5bn in revenue from \u201chigher risk\u201d scam ads every six months. Other documents stated that Meta\u2019s anti-fraud rules did not appear to apply to many ads that regulators and the company\u2019s own staff believed \u201cviolated the spirit\u201d of its rules against scam advertising.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In response to the Reuters report, Meta said it had reduced user reports of scams by 58% over the last 18 months.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The Hawley-Blumenthal letter \u201cmakes claims that are exaggerated and wrong\u201d, a Meta spokesman, Andy Stone, said. \u201cWe aggressively fight fraud and scams because people on our platforms don\u2019t want this content, legitimate advertisers don\u2019t want it and we don\u2019t want it either.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Hawley, a Republican, and Blumenthal, a Democrat, expressed skepticism about Meta\u2019s efforts to combat illicit advertising. They pointed to the company\u2019s \u201cad library\u201d, a publicly accessible database of advertising that appears on Meta\u2019s social-media platforms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cEven a short review of Meta\u2019s Ad Library at the time of this letter shows clearly identifiable advertisements for illicit gambling, payment scams, crypto scams, AI deepfake sex services, and fake offers of federal benefits,\u201d they wrote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The senators cited Reuters reporting that Meta itself estimated its platforms were involved in a third of all scams in the US, and went on to note that the FTC estimates Americans lost $158.3bn to scams last year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cScams have been allowed to take over Facebook and Instagram as Meta has drastically cut its safety staff, including for FTC mandated reviews, even as it dumps unimaginable sums into its generative AI projects.\u201c<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Blumenthal and Hawley expressed particular concern about fake ads purporting to represent the US government or political figures.
