Late-night hosts celebrated the congressional votes to release the Epstein files and decried Donald Trump\u2019s warm meeting with the Saudi crown prince, Mohammed bin Salman.<\/p>\n
Tuesday was \u201ca very big day\u201d in Washington DC, said Jimmy Kimmel on Tuesday evening, as both the House and Senate voted near unanimously to authorize the justice department to release investigative files related to the late pedophile Jeffrey Epstein.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
\u201cUltimately even [speaker] Mike Johnson voted yes on releasing the files,\u201d Kimmel noted, meaning that the bill now heads to the White House, where it will probably66 be signed by Trump.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe goal was to have the bill pass by such a large margin that Trump can\u2019t put his little orange thumb on the scale and give it the old Cheeto veto,\u201d he explained. \u201cBut make no mistake: this isn\u2019t over. He\u2019s not giving up. If anyone thinks he\u2019s going to release all of the Epstein files, I\u2019ve got a beautiful East Wing of the White House to sell you.\u201d<\/p>\n
That\u2019s because even after the vote, \u201cTrump cronies\u201d in the justice department still have the power to withhold information to \u201cprotect ongoing investigations, protect innocent people or for reasons of national security\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut they would never do anything like that, would they?\u201d Kimmel joked. \u201cThey\u2019re sworn to protect the constitution of the United States!<\/p>\n
\u201cSomething is fishy,\u201d he added. \u201cTrump rolled over faster than that dog Ghislaine Maxwell gets to play with in her country club prison.\u201d<\/p>\n
On that note: \u201cIt is amazing the kind of special treatment you get when half of the most powerful people from the last 30 years don\u2019t want to see you testifying in court.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen it comes to Congress, it\u2019s increasingly rare that things happen,\u201d said Stephen Colbert on Tuesday\u2019s Late Show. Which made Tuesday, when the House voted 427-1 to release the Epstein files, all the more notable.<\/p>\n
The measure then headed to the Senate, which passed it unanimously overnight, after the Late Show taping. \u201cTomorrow, we might know everything he and his pervert buddies did,\u201d said Colbert. \u201cMeaning it\u2019s Epstein Rockin\u2019 Eve \u2013 stay up for a ball drop you\u2019re gonna want to miss.\u201d<\/p>\n
The vote marked \u201ca huge loss for Trump, make no mistake\u201d, he continued. \u201cFor going on four months now, Trump and Speaker Mike Johnson fought the release of the Epstein files with every congressional tool they had, and keep in mind: Congress is loaded with some major tools.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cBut when it looked like Republicans were defecting en masse and they were going to lose big, they were suddenly all in, like they always were \u2013 right, Mike?\u201d<\/p>\n
Colbert then played a clip of Johnson claiming that \u201cRepublicans support maximum transparency. We always have. The president of the United States supports maximum transparency.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYes, the president has always supported maximum transparency, a healthy diet of leafy greens and the understated androgynous sensuality of a flat-chested woman,\u201d Colbert mocked. \u201cThe president would be here, but he can\u2019t talk right now as he\u2019s jogging to Bible study.\u201d<\/p>\n
Colbert also criticized Trump\u2019s chummy White House visit with the Saudi crown prince, Mohammed bin Salman. And when a reporter brought up the murder of the journalist and regime critic Jamal Khashoggi, which US intelligence concluded was authorized by the crown prince, Trump reacted angrily. \u201cThings happen, but he knew nothing about it, and we can leave it at that,\u201d he said. \u201cYou don\u2019t have to embarrass our guest by asking a question like that.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYes, how dare you embarrass our guest!\u201d Colbert mocked. \u201cNow he\u2019s going to feel all self-conscious when he tries to chop up somebody like you.\u201d<\/p>\n
And on Late Night, Seth Meyers returned to a meeting earlier this month between Trump and representatives from Switzerland, in which they gifted the president a special Rolex desktop clock and a 1kg personalized gold bar. \u201cSo now foreign officials are just openly giving him gold?\u201d he wondered. \u201cTrump\u2019s turning into a live-action political cartoon. Next time, someone\u2019s going to give him a big sack with a dollar sign on it.\u201d<\/p>\n
In a new interview with a British rightwing news channel, Trump said that people will ask him: \u201cWhat do you recommend for growing your children?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI don\u2019t know if I want advice on raising children from someone who doesn\u2019t even know it\u2019s called \u2018raising children\u2019,\u201d Meyers said, laughing.<\/p>\n
In the same interview, Trump said: \u201cI\u2019ve never had a drink in my life, and I don\u2019t take drugs.\u201d<\/p>\n
