Virginia\u2019s Louisa County school district is on the leading edge of providing educators with professional development on artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n
Recently, the district has shifted its PD approach, from helping teachers use AI to draft lesson plans or parent emails to supporting teachers in integrating the technology directly into instruction and student learning.<\/p>\n
Some of Louisa\u2019s teachers, though, have run into AI resistance from a surprising group: their own students.<\/p>\n
The reaction from students has been \u201coverwhelmingly negative,\u201d said Marcia Flores, a career and technical education teacher at Louisa County High School.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey say, \u2018Isn\u2019t that cheating?\u2019\u201d Flores said on Nov. 13 during a virtual panel at an Education Week K-12 Essentials Forum. In response, she tells them, \u201cI want you to use this to make your [work] better. It can help you with ideas.\u201d<\/p>\n
Even so, \u201ctrying to get them on board has been harder than I thought it would be, honestly,\u201d Flores said.<\/p>\n
Her observation is particularly surprising, given that more than two-thirds of teens\u201469%\u2014use AI tools regularly to find information, according to a report released last month by the College Board, a nonprofit organization.<\/p>\n
Students are still wrapping their heads around the contrast between using the technology for school versus, as one panelist put it, \u201cat home alone in their rooms where no one can see them,\u201d said Kenneth Bouwens, the district\u2019s Career and Technical Education and Innovation director and its AI lead, who also spoke on the virtual panel.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen they\u2019re in the classroom, and it\u2019s like, \u2018here\u2019s AI, use it,\u2019 they\u2019re like, \u2018I\u2019m not supposed to,\u2019\u201d Bouwens said.<\/p>\n
Part of the district\u2019s focus this year will be explaining to students the difference between using AI as a helpful tool (for instance, to revise an email) as opposed to using it unethically.<\/p>\n
Students should grasp that they can\u2019t \u201cturn in a 10-page paper that was written by AI and say [they] did it,\u201d Bouwens said. \u201cJust trying to get them to understand that [distinction] is what we\u2019re working toward this year.\u201d The districts\u2019 teachers have brainstormed ways to reinforce this, possibly including creating a \u2018traffic light\u2019 graphic showing when and to what degree it is appropriate to use AI on an assignment.<\/p>\n
