Late-night hosts tore into the next chapter of Donald Trump\u2019s never-ending Jeffrey Epstein scandal.<\/p>\n
Jon Stewart ripped into Trump on Monday evening after the president abruptly changed tack and called on House Republicans to authorize the justice department\u2019s release of files related to Epstein, a convicted sex offender \u2013 files which Trump himself could order to be released.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
\u201cIf he had nothing to hide, he could have declassified and released these files himself at any time,\u201d the Daily Show host explained. \u201cHow do I know this? A legal expert named Donald Jurisprudence Trump said so.\u201d<\/p>\n
Stewart then played footage of Trump from 2022 in which he insisted that the president can declassify anything, at any time, just by saying so or \u201ceven by thinking about it\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cIs it possible that Trump\u2019s whole bullshit facade is crumbling?\u201d Stewart wondered. \u201cI mean, right now, all he can do is distract from one lie with what is clearly another lie.\u201d<\/p>\n
Stewart then rolled a clip of Trump attempting that move, telling reporters: \u201cAll I want is I want for people to recognize a great job that I\u2019ve done on pricing, on affordability.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat planet do you live on?\u201d Stewart responded. \u201cGreat job on affordability? My Taco Bell order is now $72!\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThis dude is flailing,\u201d he later added. \u201cThe normally reliable Trump is even struggling to deliver on his greatest gift: the cutting nickname.\u201d<\/p>\n
Over the weekend, he took to Truth Social to call his former ally Marjorie Taylor Greene \u201cMarjorie Taylor Brown\u201d, explaining in parentheses that green grass turns brown when it rots.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou know, I\u2019ve always said that the best nicknames are the ones you have to explain in parentheses,\u201d Stewart joked.<\/p>\n
Jokes aside, Stewart concluded: \u201cEpstein was a convicted sex offender at the time of these emails. And of course, mentioned in these emails more than anyone else, more than 1,600 times, is Donald Trump.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIs that evidence of his guilt? No,\u201d he continued. \u201cBut it shows that he\u2019s a part of that world and certainly the circumstantial evidence points to his understanding of what was occurring.\u201d<\/p>\n
On the Late Show, Stephen Colbert homed in on one specific email from Epstein, in which the late pedophile claimed Trump \u201cknew about the girls\u201d. The line prompted Republicans to accuse Democrats of cherrypicking. \u201cLet\u2019s pause there,\u201d said Colbert. \u201cGuys, for this one, let\u2019s maybe go with a different fruit.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo to prove that the Democrats were, let\u2019s say, pineapple-choosing,\u201d he continued, \u201cHouse Republicans released 20,000-plus pages of other Epstein documents.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey did it to show that they were way more transparent than the Democrats, who they say released just enough to make Trump look bad,\u201d said Colbert. \u201cAnd they were right because the Republicans\u2019 additional release of documents made him look awful.\u201d<\/p>\n
In the new batch of documents, Trump\u2019s named appeared more than 1,500 times.<\/p>\n
\u201cThese are not casual mentions, either,\u201d Colbert noted. In one email, Epstein wrote: \u201ci have met some very bad people ,, none as bad as trump. not one decent cell in his body.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s gotta hurt when Jeffrey Epstein calls you<\/em> a bad guy,\u201d said Colbert. \u201cThat\u2019s like an airport muffin accusing you of being dry.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cThis weekend, Trump sought to quell the Maga furor by ordering an investigation, but only into Democrats,\u201d Seth Meyers explained on Monday\u2019s Late Night. \u201cWhich even some Republicans fear could be another delay tactic.\u201d<\/p>\n As Representative Thomas Massie of Kentucky put it: \u201cIf they have ongoing investigations in certain areas, those documents can\u2019t be released. So this might be a big smokescreen, these investigations, to open up a bunch of them as a last-ditch effort to prevent the release of the Epstein files.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cHow dare you accuse the president of setting up a smokescreen,\u201d Meyers laughed. \u201cFor one thing, I don\u2019t think he\u2019s nimble enough for that. If Trump threw down a smoke pellet, he wouldn\u2019t run away. He would just stand there coughing until the smoke cleared.\u201d<\/p>\n Reporters asked Trump about Massie\u2019s statement on Sunday night, and \u201call Trump had to do was make clear that he was sincerely interested in getting to the truth\u201d, said Meyers.<\/p>\n Instead, Trump claimed \u201cfake news\u201d and said the media \u201ckept bringing [Epstein] up to deflect from the tremendous success of the Trump administration\u201d.<\/p>\n \u201cNailed it!\u201d Meyers joked. \u201cEveryone knows the least suspicious thing you can do when someone asks you about a scandal is to say \u2018I don\u2019t want to talk about it\u2019 and then immediately insult. Try that next time your spouse asks why you got home so late.\u201d<\/p>\n And then Trump flip-flopped again, telling House Republicans to vote for a discharge petition for the justice department\u2019s release of the Epstein files, after he spent months opposing the measure. \u201cBut the whole point of the House vote was to force you to release the files, which you can do on your own. So if you\u2019re in favor of releasing the files, then just do it,\u201d said Meyers. \u201cThis new position makes even less sense.\u201d<\/p>\n And in Los Angeles, Jimmy Kimmel looked ahead to a House vote, possibly as early as Tuesday, to authorize the release of the files, with dozens of Republicans expected to break ranks. \u201cWhich has forced Trump to now claim that he\u2019s for <\/em>the files being released,\u201d Kimmel noted. \u201cAfter almost a year of saying he didn\u2019t want them released, after a year of stalling, hedging, browbeating members of his own party, last night, all of a sudden, Trump reversed course completely.\u201d<\/p>\n Trump posted on Truth Social: \u201cAs I said on Friday night aboard Air Force One to the Fake News Media, House Republicans should vote to release the Epstein files, because we have nothing to hide.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cWe have nothing to hide?\u201d Kimmel laughed. \u201cThere\u2019s no \u2018we\u2019. \u2018We\u2019 have nothing to hide.
