\n\tU.S. President Donald Trump has confirmed he will bring a lawsuit against the BBC over an edited speech of his in a\u00a0Panorama\u00a0<\/em>documentary.<\/p>\n \n\t\u201cWe\u2019ll sue them. We\u2019ll sue them for anywhere between a billion and five billion dollars, probably sometime next week,\u201d he told reporters on Air Force One on Friday night, according to White House audio of the press opportunity posted to YouTube.<\/p>\n \n\tTrump was responding to a question from a British reporter over the BBC apologizing for the documentary edit in its Trump: A Second Chance?<\/em>\u00a0program, but rejecting any basis for compensation.<\/p>\n \n\t\u201cI have to do it. I mean, they\u2019ve even admitted that they cheated. I mean, not that they couldn\u2019t have not done that. They cheated. They changed the words coming out of my mouth. That\u2019s worse than what CBS did with Kamala,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n \n\tA BBC spokesperson on Thursday, in a statement, said \u201cBBC chair Samir Shah has separately sent a personal letter to the White House making clear to President Trump that he and the corporation are sorry for the edit of the President\u2019s speech on 6 January 2021, which featured in the program.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tThe U.K. broadcaster\u2019s statement added: \u201cWhile the BBC sincerely regrets the manner in which the video clip was edited, we strongly disagree there is a basis for a defamation claim.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tTrump, in his press encounter on Air Force One on Friday, said he would discuss the issue with U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer this weekend, and asserted, \u201cthe people of the U.K. are very angry about what happened as you can imagine because it shows the BBC is fake news.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tEarlier this week, BBC News CEO Deborah Turness and the corporation\u2019s director-general\u00a0Tim Davie resigned\u00a0after the BBC was found to have edited a Jan. 6, 2021, address where Trump, speaking before the attack on the Capitol in Washington, D.C., was made to appear as though he was \u201ccalling for violent action,\u201d according to BBC chair Shah.<\/p>\n \n\tThis week\u2019s series of responses from the BBC were intended in part to respond to Trump\u2019s threat of a lawsuit against the U.K. broadcaster, much as he has done with U.S. news outlets in the U.S., including\u00a0The<\/em>\u00a0New York Times\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0The<\/em>\u00a0Wall Street Journal<\/em>.\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" U.S. President Donald Trump has confirmed he will bring a lawsuit against the BBC over an edited speech of his in a\u00a0Panorama\u00a0documentary. \u201cWe\u2019ll sue them.
