In the essay \u201cMisogyny and \u2018Hoeflation\u2019 at the National Association of Scholars\u201d (Oct.\u00a028, 2025) John K. Wilson takes aim at me and Minding the Campus<\/em>.\u00a0<\/p>\n He describes me generously as an \u201cidiot,\u201d but an influential one in the conservative movement. He misinterprets nearly every line of my essay \u201cCollege Students in a Romance Recession, Boys Blame \u2018Hoeflation.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n His central charge is that I\u2019m a misogynist. His evidence is that I use the word \u201choeflation.\u201d Using a term coined by others to describe a social trend does not mean I endorse it. Reporting or analyzing a phenomenon is not the same as condoning it.<\/p>\n In my essay, I wrote,<\/p>\n \u201cAnd, unfortunately for men, dating algorithms concentrate attention on the top 10\u00a0percent\u2014those deemed most attractive\u2014rendering the majority effectively unseen. This imbalance has led young men to coin the term \u2018hoeflation,\u2019 the grind of chasing women they might barely fancy, but will date just to escape loneliness. (Young American men experience loneliness at rates far exceeding those of their counterparts across other developed countries.)\u201d<\/p>\n This was an observation on what is being said among some young men. The term reflects a real cultural phenomenon: Many young men feel alienated from modern dating, seeing it as transactional, unequal or algorithmically stacked against them.
