\n\tDuring a recent sit-down with NPR, Guillermo del Toro asserted that he would \u201crather die\u201d than use artificial intelligence, \u201cparticularly generative AI,\u201d in any of his future films. He compared the growing cultural fascination surrounding the controversial tech to the \u201carrogance\u201d displayed by the titular literary madman in his Netflix adaptation of \u201cFrankenstein.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cAI, particularly generative AI \u2014 I am not interested, nor will I ever be interested,\u201d del Toro said. \u201cI\u2019m 61, and I hope to be able to remain uninterested in using it at all until I croak. \u2026 The other day, somebody wrote me an email, said, \u2018What is your stance on AI?\u2019 And my answer was very short. I said, \u2018I\u2019d rather die.’\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\tThe \u201cPan\u2019s Labyrinth\u201d director explained that the true dangers aren\u2019t with the technology itself, but with \u201cnatural stupidity,\u201d which could drive the mishandling of AI. He added that \u201cnatural stupidity\u201d is what pushes \u201cmost of the world\u2019s worst features.\u201d He went on to connect the character of Victor Frankenstein to those at the forefront of AI development.<\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cI did want it to have the arrogance of Victor [Frankenstein] be similar in some ways to the tech bros,\u201d he said. \u201cHe\u2019s kind of blind, creating something without considering the consequences and I think we have to take a pause and consider where we\u2019re going.\u201d<\/p>\n
