Two others have said they are providing feedback. Universities will be added to the map and table below as they make public statements.<\/p>\n<p>The wide-ranging proposal would require universities to ban consideration of race or sex in hiring and admissions, freeze tuition, commit to not considering transgender women to be women and shut down departments that \u201cpunish, belittle\u201d or \u201cspark violence against conservative ideas,\u201d among other provisions. Trump officials say universities that sign on could get access to some benefits such as preferential treatment for grant funding. But those that don\u2019t want to adhere to the agreement are free to \u201cforego [<em>sic<\/em>] federal benefits.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Trump Officials\u2019 Letter to Universities<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Higher ed leaders and observers see the compact as the Trump administration\u2019s blueprint for overhauling America\u2019s colleges and universities. Trump officials view it as an opportunity for the \u201cproactive improvement of higher education for the betterment of the country.\u201d Critics have urged institutions to reject the proposal, arguing it undermines institutions\u2019 independence and carries steep penalties.<\/p>\n<p>Nine universities were initially asked Oct.\u00a01 to give \u201climited, targeted feedback\u201d by Oct.\u00a020 on the document that Trump officials said was \u201clargely in its final form.\u201d President Trump said in mid-October that any college that wants to \u201creturn to the pursuit of Truth and Achievement\u201d could sign on but didn\u2019t explain<strong> <\/strong>how interested institutions could do so. No college has publicly taken Trump up on his offer.
