\n\tMariska Hargitay appeared on Amy Poehler\u2019s \u201cGood Hang\u201d podcast and revealed she auditioned and screen tested many times for \u201cFriends\u201d a few years before landing the role of Olivia Benson on \u201cLaw & Order: Special Victims Unit.\u201d Both shows are NBC staples.<\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cI did a lot of comedy auditions,\u201d Hargitay told Poehler (via The Daily Beast). \u201cI did \u2018Seinfeld\u2019 and I did \u2018Single Guy,\u2019 and I tested for \u2018Friends\u2019 so many times. I think for Monica. I always thought I would end up being on a sitcom or doing comedy.\u201d <\/p>\n
\n\tEven when more dramatic roles came her way, Hargitay said: \u201cI was like, I want to do drama but it has to be funny because that\u2019s what I felt like my gifts were\u2026 [I would tell people], \u2018I\u2019m going to be a comedian because I\u2019m funny and I\u2019m pretty.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\tHargitay\u2019s reveal may surprise some. The actor has been playing Olivia Benson on \u201cSVU\u201d for more than 25 years, which makes her the longest-running character in live-action primetime TV history. It wasn\u2019t until Hargitay consulted with a psychic that she was confronted with the possibility that comedy might not work out.<\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cI\u2019m in L.A., [a] struggling actor [wondering] what am I going to do?\u201d Hargitay said. \u201cI came to New York, which I did three times a year to see theater. And then I met with this psychic. Everyone said to me, \u2018Oh my gosh, Mariska, you have to meet with this psychic. He\u2019s amazing.\u2019 \u2026 I drove out somewhere on Long Island to this man and I went there and he started saying all this amazing stuff to me.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cI was listening to him really intently like this. He said to me\u2026 \u2018You see that face you\u2019re doing right now? You see that face?\u2019 I said, \u2018Yeah.\u2019 He goes, \u2018You\u2019re going to be famous for that face. You\u2019re moving to New York and you\u2019re gonna be famous for that face,\u2019\u201d Hargitay continued, noting she still wanted to land a network sitcom role at the time. \u201cI said, \u2018Uh, no.\u2019 I live in L.A. and I\u2019m going to be a comedian. Six months later, swear to God\u2026 I got \u2018SVU.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
