{"id":28607,"date":"2025-10-17T02:53:18","date_gmt":"2025-10-17T02:53:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/naijaglobalnews.org\/?p=28607"},"modified":"2025-10-17T02:53:18","modified_gmt":"2025-10-17T02:53:18","slug":"nestle-to-axe-16000-jobs-as-new-chief-targets-sales-growth-nestle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/naijaglobalnews.org\/?p=28607","title":{"rendered":"Nestl\u00e9 to axe 16,000 jobs as new chief targets sales growth | Nestl\u00e9"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Nestl\u00e9 has said it will cut 16,000 jobs over the next two years as the owner of KitKat and Nescaf\u00e9 attempts to reduce costs and increase sales.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The Swiss-headquartered multinational said the cuts would include 12,000 white-collar professionals and 4,000 in its manufacturing and supply chain, close to 6% of Nestl\u00e9\u2019s global workforce.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThe world is changing and Nestl\u00e9 needs to change faster,\u201d said Philipp Navratil, the new chief executive. \u201cThis will include making hard but necessary decisions to reduce headcount over the next two years. We will do this with respect and transparency.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Navratil, who replaced Laurent Freixe last month after he was fired for failing to disclose a romantic relationship with a subordinate, announced an acceleration of his predecessor\u2019s cost-saving plan to free up cash.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The company, which owns consumer goods brands including H\u00e4agen-Dazs ice-cream, Nespresso coffee capsules and Purina cat food, will seek to make savings of 3bn Swiss francs (\u00a32.8bn) by 2027, up from a previous target of 2.5bn francs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Freixe\u2019s firing, which was followed two weeks later by the resignation of the chair, Paul Bulcke, destabilised a company that was already under pressure to bolster growth and reduce debt.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWe will be bolder in investing at scale and driving innovation to deliver accelerated growth and value creation,\u201d Navratil said. \u201cWe are fostering a culture that embraces a performance mindset, that does not accept losing market share, and where winning is rewarded.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Nestl\u00e9 employed nearly 4,200 staff in the UK at the end of last year, according to company filings. Its UK head office is in Gatwick, and it has a production facility in York that makes KitKats.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The company would not give details about the scale of job losses in individual countries, but said it wanted to increase efficiencies across the group, including automating more of its work processes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The cuts were announced as the company reported a 1.9% year-on-year fall in sales to 65.9bn francs in the first nine months of the year. Sales growth was led by coffee and confectionery, where Nestl\u00e9 has had to factor in higher coffee and cocoa costs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Geographically, all regions achieved organic growth, with emerging markets expanding at 5.2% and developed markets at 2.1%.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Chris Beckett, a consumer staples analyst at Quilter Cheviot, said: \u201cThe new Nestl\u00e9 chief executive has used today\u2019s results to indicate that despite his history as a career Nestl\u00e9 employee, it will not be business as usual.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201c[He is] happy [to] take drastic action to arrest Nestl\u00e9\u2019s slide.
