We\u2019ve just spent two weeks in London, staying in south Kensington (\u2018London has turned into something crazy\u2019: is the city in the grip of a crime wave?, 11 October). The only crime we witnessed was being woken up in the early hours by people racing Lamborghinis and Ferraris, with little enforcement by the police. We travelled all over using public transport and walking, and felt safe, so I don\u2019t think the supposed crime wave is anything to fear. If reading a book every month is too much (Letters, 12 October), you can join the ShelterBox Book Club, where you get a book in the post every six weeks, and being a member helps ShelterBox support disaster-hit families around the world. There are also online discussions and author Q&As. It\u2019s good that \u201cThe clue as to where Milan should play home fixtures is in the name\u201d (Editorial, 10 October). However, that might prove difficult for Port Vale, unless they relocate from Burslem to somewhere ships can dock. Robert East is spot-on when he calls for new institutions combining further and higher education to end universities\u2019 grip on the UK psyche (Letters, 9 October). But what to call these places? How about polytechnics? Kit Jackson hopes to see William Hill close its \u201cvile gambling shops\u201d if taxes rise (Letters, 13 October). I\u00a0wouldn\u2019t bet on it.
