Armando Iannucci has revealed that he has been having trouble funding a Donald Trump project.<\/p>\n
According to Deadline, the creator of Veep has been trying to launch an untitled work based on the US president\u2019s speeches but has claimed that he is struggling to secure interest.<\/p>\n
Iannucci was speaking at a Creative UK event in Liverpool and he paraphrased conversations he has been having with potential buyers in the US.<\/p>\n
\u201cI got a lot of: \u2018Yeah, you wouldn\u2019t get the money for that at the moment, I\u2019m afraid.\u2019\u201d he said. \u201cSo I said: \u2018Why not?\u2019 [They replied:] \u2018Well, you know, if you want what comes with it \u2026 \u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
His comments arrive at a time of concern over free speech under the second Trump administration. He added that he was warned of possible retribution.<\/p>\n
\u201c[I\u2019ve been] talking to journalists out there who say, \u2018If you\u2019re on the list, your life is made miserable.\u2019\u201d he said. \u201c[The message was], the inland revenue will come calling, you better lawyer up, you will spend the next four years just weighed down by legal issues you have to get through.\u201d<\/p>\n
While no more details were shared about the project, including whether it would be a TV series or film, he added that he was still determined to make it happen without US funding. \u201cLet\u2019s see what happens,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Iannucci also spoke about Trump\u2019s renewed threats of tariffs for non-American production. \u201cNobody knows how it works, but that\u2019s not the point,\u201d he said. \u201cThe point is, there will be financiers in America about to give money to a project going: \u2018Do you know what? Let\u2019s just see how this plays out before I hand that over.\u2019 And so you\u2019ll have another project sitting there.\u201d<\/p>\n
Iannucci, whose film credits include The Death of Stalin and The Personal History of David Copperfield, was most recently an executive producer on comedy series The Franchise.<\/p>\n
Last year\u2019s 80s-set drama The Apprentice, which features Trump raping his then wife Ivana, was viewed by the president as defamatory and his lawyers sent a cease-and-desist letter to the producers. \u201cThis garbage is pure fiction which sensationalises lies that have been long debunked,\u201d his then spokesperson Stephen Cheung said. \u201cThis \u2018film\u2019 is pure malicious defamation, should not see the light of day, and doesn\u2019t even deserve a place in the straight-to-DVD section of a bargain bin at a soon-to-be-closed discount movie store. It belongs in a dumpster fire.\u201d<\/p>\n
The film went on to receive two Oscar nominations for best actor and best supporting actor.<\/p>\n
