Keir Starmer\u2019s new No 10 enforcer has compared Nigel Farage to the influencer Andrew Tate, saying he is a \u201csnake oil salesman\u201d who is taking working-class boys down a dark path.<\/p>\n
Darren Jones, the No 10 chief secretary to the prime minister, said Labour was going to take a more \u201cmuscular approach to attacking Reform\u201d and it would be \u201cmore proactive than just responding to the crazy things they\u2019re saying\u201d.<\/p>\n
The senior cabinet minister said he was infuriated by Reform\u2019s message to young boys of \u201chate, division and othering\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m pretty middle-class now but I was a white working-class boy and we are going to be putting in measures \u2026 to give those types of kids the best chance in life,\u201d he said at a Labour Together fringe event, in conversation with Sky\u2019s Beth Rigby.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat are Reform offering? They have no offer to them apart than hate, division, othering and wanting to tear the system down. We don\u2019t want people growing up led by Reform thinking they should be hating Britain.<\/p>\n
\u201cNigel Farage hates the BBC, he hates the NHS, he hates the government, he wants to tear everything down. That is not a positive vision for the future that young people can feel excited and aspirational about.\u201d<\/p>\n
When pressed on Farage\u2019s big following with young people, especially young men, Jones said: \u201cSo does Andrew Tate but that doesn\u2019t mean it\u2019s OK. I\u2019d put them in similar categories, quite frankly. They are snake oil salesmen that are misleading people and taking them down a dark path for them and for our country. We have to bring the light into that debate \u2026. that\u2019s the battle we will step up into.\u201d<\/p>\n
Tate, a self-proclaimed misogynist influencer, has been accused of sexual violence in a civil case in London by four women. Tate\u2019s barristers have told an earlier court hearing there was \u201ctotal denial of wrongdoing\u201d.<\/p>\n
It emerged on Monday that he will face no criminal charges over allegations made by the four women, who are suing him in a civil case at the high court in London.<\/p>\n
Many politicians and teachers have spoken out against Tate\u2019s influence on young boys in the UK, after he said women belonged in the home and were a man\u2019s property. \u201cThere\u2019s no way you can be rooted in reality and not be sexist,\u201d Tate said in one video.<\/p>\n
In the past, Farage has said he does not agree with Tate, but he has praised him for being an \u201cimportant voice\u201d for the \u201cemasculated\u201d and giving boys \u201cperhaps a bit of confidence at school\u201d .<\/p>\n
The Reform UK leader spoke in favour of Tate for defending \u201cmale culture\u201d in a Strike It Big podcast that aired in February last year, while acknowledging that the influencer had gone \u201cover the top\u201d and elsewhere that he had said some \u201cpretty horrible\u201d things.<\/p>\n
Wes Streeting, the health secretary, used the similar language of calling Farage the \u201csnake oil salesman of British politics\u201d in his speech to the conference floor in Liverpool \u2013 suggesting it is an orchestrated political criticism of the Reform UK leader.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe must win another fight too, one against the poison of post-truth politics,\u201d he said. \u201cAt Reform\u2019s conference, a discredited doctor claimed that the Covid vaccine gave our royal family cancer. This man wasn\u2019t just some fringe figure \u2013 he\u2019s Reform\u2019s health adviser.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd these anti-vax lies have consequences: they\u2019ve led to the return of diseases we thought we defeated \u2013 measles, whooping cough, children dying from preventable illness in this the 21st century.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen Farage was asked whether he\u2019d side with medical scientists, he said, \u2018I wouldn\u2019t side with anybody\u2019 \u2013 anti-science, anti-reason, anti-health \u2026 Nigel Farage is a snake-oil salesman of British politics, and it\u2019s time to stop buying what he\u2019s selling.\u201d<\/p>\n
Starmer has been increasing his criticism of Farage in recent days, calling Reform\u2019s policy of axing the right of migrants to apply for indefinite leave to remain \u201cracist\u201d.<\/p>\n
