Harry Potter author JK Rowling has responded to Emma Watson\u2019s recent remarks about their rift over transgender rights, saying the actor is \u201cignorant of how ignorant she is\u201d.<\/p>\n
Rowling\u2019s post comes after a podcast interview with Watson, in which the latter said: \u201cI really don\u2019t believe that \u2026 holding the love and support and views that I have, mean[s] that I can\u2019t and don\u2019t treasure Jo and the person that I had personal experiences with.\u201d<\/p>\n
In a lengthy post, Rowling writes: \u201cEmma Watson and her co-stars have every right to embrace gender identity ideology. Such beliefs are legally protected, and I wouldn\u2019t want to see any of them threatened with loss of work, or violence, or death, because of them.\u201d<\/p>\n
She adds: \u201cHowever, Emma and Dan [Radcliffe] in particular have both made it clear over the last few years that they think our former professional association gives them a particular right \u2013 nay, obligation \u2013 to critique me and my views in public.\u201d<\/p>\n
Watson, along with Harry Potter co-stars Radcliffe and Rupert Grint, has previously taken issue with the author\u2019s gender critical beliefs. She responded to Rowling\u2019s essay about the need for single-sex spaces due to the threat of violence against women by tweeting in 2020: \u201cTrans people are who they say they are and deserve to live their lives without being constantly questioned or told they aren\u2019t who they say they are.\u201d And Watson pointedly said \u201cI\u2019m here for all of the witches\u201d in a speech at the 2022 Bafta film awards.<\/p>\n
In her post, Rowling says she has \u201crepeatedly declined invitations\u201d to comment on Watson\u2019s views, as she \u201cdidn\u2019t want her to be hounded as the result of anything I said\u201d, and describes a note she was given from Watson, following her 2022 Baftas remarks. \u201cThis was back when the death, rape and torture threats against me were at their peak, at a time when my personal security measures had had to be tightened considerably and I was constantly worried for my family\u2019s safety. Emma had just publicly poured more petrol on the flames, yet thought a one line expression of concern from her would reassure me of her fundamental sympathy and kindness.\u201d<\/p>\n
Rowling added: \u201cLike other people who\u2019ve never experienced adult life uncushioned by wealth and fame, Emma has so little experience of real life she\u2019s ignorant of how ignorant she is \u2026 I wasn\u2019t a multimillionaire at fourteen. I lived in poverty while writing the book that made Emma famous. I therefore understand from my own life experience what the trashing of women\u2019s rights in which Emma has so enthusiastically participated means to women and girls without her privileges.\u201d<\/p>\n
