\n\tCyril Aris\u2019 \u201cA Sad and Beautiful World,\u201d a love story spanning three decades in Beirut against the backdrop of its tumultuous history, has been selected as Lebanon\u2019s candidate for the Oscars best international feature film category.<\/p>\n
\n\tThe film stars Mounia Akl (\u201cCosta Brava, Lebanon\u201d) as Yasmina, and Hasan Akil (\u201cMemory Box\u201d) as Nino, two childhood sweethearts who reunite in their late 20s and grapple with romance, harsh reality and the timeless question of bringing children into an uncertain world amid the tragedies ravaging the country. The cast is completed by Julia Kassar, Camille Salameh, Anthony Karam and Nadyn Chalhoub.<\/p>\n
\n\tCyril Aris previously made the documentary\u00a0\u201cDancing on the Edge of a Volcano,\u201d which made a splash in competition at Karlovy Vary in 2023. His first feature doc \u201cThe Swing\u00a0(2018), also premiered at Karlovy Vary and earned multiple awards. \u201cA Sad and Beautiful World\u201d is Aris\u2019 first narrative feature.<\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cA Sad and Beautiful World\u201d is produced by prominent Lebanese producer Georges Schoucair\u00a0via his Abbout Productions, whose credits include \u201cCosta Brava,\u201d \u201cLebanon\u201d and \u201cMemory Box.\u201d The film is also
produced by U.S. banner Diversity Hire (\u201cJoyland\u201d), alongside Reynard Films in Germany. It is co-produced with Sunnyland Film, a member of ART and Saudi Arabia\u2019s Red Sea Fund.<\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cA Sad and Beautiful World\u201d launched from the Venice Film Festival\u2019s independently run Giornate Degli Autori, aka Venice Days, where it tied with another title for the People\u2019s Choice Award.<\/p>\n
\n\tFrance\u2019s Paradise City Sales is handling sales on \u201cA Sad and Beautiful World,\u201d which will be released by Sunnyland in the Middle East and Neue Visionen in Germany.<\/p>\n
