Late-show hosts discuss Jimmy Kimmel\u2019s record-breaking return to air and Donald Trump\u2019s escalator snafu at the United Nations.<\/p>\n
After breaking his own YouTube monologue record and attracting 6.2 million broadcast viewers on Tuesday night, Kimmel celebrated the fact that his show returned again on Wednesday \u2013 at least, \u201cfor most of the country\u201d, as Jimmy Kimmel Live! remained off the air for a number of ABC affiliates, including channels in Seattle, Washington DC, Nashville, New Orleans, St Louis and elsewhere.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
\u201cThank God they\u2019re not pre-empting the new season of The Golden Bachelor because of this,\u201d he joked, referring to his suspension by ABC owner Disney under pressure from the Trump administration. \u201cThe FCC might not like jokes about the president, but they are still very OK with Poppop getting a squeezer in a Jacuzzi, and I think we can be very grateful for that.<\/p>\n
\u201cA lot of people watched our show last night,\u201d he continued. \u201cI got so many texts from so many people \u2013 it made me realize how many of my friends are never watching the show at any other time.\u201d<\/p>\n
That included \u201cone very special friend\u201d \u2013 Trump, Kimmel\u2019s beloved \u201cmad red hatter\u201d, who wrote on Truth Social hours before Kimmel aired: \u201cI can\u2019t believe ABC Fake News gave Jimmy Kimmel his job back. The White House was told by ABC that his Show was cancelled! Something happened between then and now because his audience is GONE, and his \u2018talent\u2019 was never there.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYou can\u2019t believe they gave me my job back?\u201d Kimmel mused. \u201cI can\u2019t believe we gave you your <\/em>job back.\u201d<\/p>\n Trump continued: \u201cI think we\u2019re going to test ABC out on this. Let\u2019s see how we do. Last time I went after them, they gave me $16 Million Dollars. This one sounds even more lucrative. A true bunch of losers!\u201d<\/p>\n Kimmel fired back: \u201cThere\u2019s the threat again, this time straight from FCC-biscuit\u2019s mouth. Only Donald Trump would try to prove he wasn\u2019t threatening ABC by threatening ABC.<\/p>\n \u201cYou almost have to feel sorry for the people who work for him, who try to clean up the messes,\u201d he added. \u201cThey go to all these lengths to say, \u2018Oh, it wasn\u2019t coercion! The president was just musing!\u2019 And then the second Trump is alone, he sits on the toilet, he gets his grubby little thumbs on his phone, and he immediately blows their excuses to smithereens, and says it was ratings that got me fired.\u201d<\/p>\n Trump ended his Truth Social rant with: \u201cLet Jimmy Kimmel rot in his bad ratings.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cAnd he does know bad ratings. He has some of the worst ratings any president has ever had,\u201d Kimmel laughed, referring to Trump\u2019s record-low poll numbers. \u201cSo on behalf of all of us, welcome to the crappy ratings club, Mr President.\u201d<\/p>\n Late in the monologue, Kimmel offered an explanation to his critics for his continued focus on Trump. \u201cI talk about Trump more than anything because he\u2019s a bully. I don\u2019t like bullies \u2013 I played the clarinet in high school.\u201d And Trump, he said, was \u201can old-fashioned, 80s movie-style bully\u201d.<\/p>\n Backing Trump was like \u201crooting for Biff from Back to the Future\u201d, he added, referring to the villain of the 1985 film. \u201cI don\u2019t know about you, I\u2019m with Marty McFly.\u201d<\/p>\n Stephen Colbert opened Wednesday\u2019s Late Show monologue in a good mood, \u201cbecause last night our good friend Jimmy Kimmel returned to television\u201d.<\/p>\n \u201cJimmy spoke beautifully about free speech and unity,\u201d he said. \u201cHe made great jokes, showed his deep emotions, got huge ratings.\u201d<\/p>\n But \u201cthat wasn\u2019t the only victory for free speech yesterday\u201d, as a statue depicting Trump and Jeffrey Epstein skipping and holding hands was placed on the National Mall. \u201cIt\u2019s a lovely piece, but I\u2019ve gotta say, not very realistic \u2013 Trump can\u2019t stand on one leg, not with those cankles!\u201d Colbert joked. \u201cIt would be like trying to balance on a sock full of overripe honeydew.\u201d<\/p>\n The controversial statue was put up by artists issued an official permit to \u201cdemonstrate freedom of speech and artistic expression using political imagery\u201d by the National Park Service. \u201cGood for you, National Park Service,\u201d said Colbert, \u201cand thank you for protecting free speech for almost 24 hours\u201d, because despite the permit allowing the sculpture to stand until Sunday, park police removed it on Wednesday morning.<\/p>\n In response, Colbert pretended to navigate the cancellation of Disney+ on his phone \u2013 \u201cworked last time!\u201d<\/p>\n Park police said the statue was not \u201cin compliance\u201d with the permit, though it did not specify how. \u201cI think we know how it violated the permit,\u201d said Colbert. \u201cWe\u2019ve all seen those signs in the national parks: \u2018Leave no trace \u2026 of the Epstein files.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n And on Late Night, Seth Meyers focused on Trump\u2019s visit to the UN in New York this week. \u201cIt\u2019s easy to forget because so much has happened, but when Trump was running for president last year, he was adamant he was going to bring peace to the world,\u201d he reminded viewers before several clips of Trump making such claims as \u201cI will end the chaos in the Middle East quickly\u201d or end the war in Ukraine \u201cin no longer than one day\u201d.<\/p>\n \u201cIn fairness, he said it would take him one day, he didn\u2019t say which<\/em> day,\u201d Meyers laughed. But \u201cas a general rule, you should always be skeptical when someone tells you they can solve any problem in one day\u201d.<\/p>\n But Trump didn\u2019t focus on any of that at his UN address. Instead, he was thrown off by a broken escalator, which shut down as soon as he stepped on to it. On Fox News, Karoline Leavitt accused the UN of trying to \u201csabotage\u201d him with the frozen escalator and teleprompter.<\/p>\n \u201cMan, you know I\u2019ve heard a lot about these globalists over the years, but I didn\u2019t realize their MO was to just burn you with soft pranks,\u201d Meyers laughed.<\/p>\n \u201cTeleprompter down, escalator off. When the president was talking, someone tied his shoelaces together! Are they a shadowy cabal or Kevin from Home Alone?\u201d<\/p>\n On Wednesday evening, Trump took to Truth Social to name the escalator episode among three \u201cvery sinister events\u201d that took place during his UN visit. He claimed that Melania avoided a \u201cdisaster\u201d by not falling \u201cforward onto the sharp edges of these steel steps, face first\u201d. He then called for the arrest of the person responsible for the frozen escalator.<\/p>\n A spokesperson for the UN previously blamed Trump\u2019s videographer for the incident, suggesting that they may have \u201cinadvertently triggered\u201d a built-in safety function while proceeding backward up the escalator to film his arrival.<\/p>\n Meyers had to laugh: \u201cOh, hey, look at that \u2013 they solved the conflict in one day!
