{"id":23898,"date":"2025-09-26T03:52:06","date_gmt":"2025-09-26T03:52:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/naijaglobalnews.org\/?p=23898"},"modified":"2025-09-26T03:52:06","modified_gmt":"2025-09-26T03:52:06","slug":"amazon-to-pay-2-5bn-to-settle-ftc-lawsuit-over-prime-subscription-traps-amazon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/naijaglobalnews.org\/?p=23898","title":{"rendered":"Amazon to pay $2.5bn to settle FTC lawsuit over Prime \u2018subscription traps\u2019 | Amazon"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Amazon has agreed to pay $2.5bn in fines and redress to Prime subscribers to settle a lawsuit by the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC), which accused the retail giant of signing users up for the service without their consent and making it difficult to cancel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In a statement, the FTC said $1.5bn of the total will go into a fund to repay eligible subscribers<strong>,<\/strong> on top of a $1bn civil penalty.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The FTC \u2013 the US agency charged with consumer protection \u2013 sued Amazon in 2023, under the Biden administration, accusing the company of enrolling tens of millions of customers into its Prime subscription service without consent \u2013 and locking them in within a labyrinthine cancellation system so laborious and complex it allegedly had a code name: \u201cIliad\u201d, after Homer\u2019s epic about the slog of the Trojan war.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The case went to trial in a federal court in Seattle earlier this week and was expected to last a month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The Trump-appointed FTC chair, Andrew N Ferguson, hailed a \u201crecord-breaking, monumental win for the millions of Americans who are tired of deceptive subscriptions that feel impossible to cancel\u201d on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThe evidence showed that Amazon used sophisticated subscription traps designed to manipulate consumers into enrolling in Prime, and then made it exceedingly hard for consumers to end their subscription,\u201d said Ferguson. \u201cToday, we are putting billions of dollars back into Americans\u2019 pockets, and making sure Amazon never does this again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Under the terms of the settlement, Amazon will be required to include a \u201cclear and conspicuous\u201d button for customers to decline a Prime subscription while shopping on its platform, the FTC said, and create an \u201ceasy way\u201d for subscribers to cancel their subscriptions. The company had previously argued that it had improved its Prime enrolment and cancellation processes and that the FTC\u2019s allegations were out of date.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWe work incredibly hard to make it clear and simple for customers to both sign up or cancel their Prime membership, and to offer substantial value for our many millions of loyal Prime members around the world,\u201d the company said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Amazon shares traded broadly flat in New York after the announcement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The company is facing a separate case brought by the FTC that the company built and maintained an illegal monopoly. The trial, presided over by the same judge as the Prime case, is set to go to trial in 2027.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The case was part of a salvo of lawsuits brought around the same time against US tech giants accusing them of abusing their dominance at the expense of smaller competitors.
