\n\tSound X Vision, an upstart pop-culture auction house specializing in \u201centertainment artifacts,\u201d joins the ranks of sector stalwarts like Heritage and Julien\u2019s. The company held its inaugural online sale of more than 300 lots on Sept. 9. Its own bid for disruption: enforced transparency in a realm where phantom bidding often creates the appearance of demand.<\/p>\n
\n\tFor Aoki, himself a longtime memorabilia collector, the curation process was about \u201cfinding and showcasing really unique pieces, things that have a direct connection to what you grew up watching and listening to, that can blow you away.\u201d He adds of pop-culture objects: \u201cThey have a different resonance than fine art. It\u2019s a teleportation feeling.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\tKey hammered pieces included a Golden Snitch from Harry Potter and the Sorcerer\u2019s Stone<\/em> ($21,760), Wolverine\u2019s claws from X2<\/em> ($19,200), Jason Voorhees\u2019 machete from Jason Goes to Hell<\/em> ($9,600) and Sylvester Stallone\u2019s light-up pistol from Judge Dredd<\/em> ($8,320). Some of the unsold merchandise included Michael Jackson\u2019s stage-worn glove from his 1984 tour, Gal Gadot\u2019s Wonder Woman <\/em>lasso, Eddie Van Halen\u2019s stage-played \u201cFrankenstrat\u201d guitar and Christian Bale\u2019s Batman cowl from The Dark Knight<\/em>.<\/p>\n \n\tAoki\u2019s SXV partner, Oz Cift, a seasoned industry veteran of the collecting space, describes the first auction as \u201cboth a litmus test and a stress test\u201d for the company, adding, \u201cwe\u2019re ready to scale up and take the platform into its next chapter\u201d with regular sales over the next year.<\/p>\n \n\tCift explains that SXV is also pursuing a strategy of direct-from-studio deals on upcoming films. The company sees particular untapped value within the sci-fi, horror and superhero fandoms. \u201cBig blockbuster movies are exciting, but sometimes it\u2019s smaller films with dedicated followings that would work best,\u201d he says. The idea is to make the merchandise available in tandem with its theatrical debut, or else later, as an additional marketing vector when the project streams or releases on physical media.<\/p>\n \n\tCift notes the pop-culture memorabilia market remains in its formative era. (\u201cAuthentication is a big topic.\u201d) But increasing numbers of deep-pocketed, avid collectors are creating more opportunities for sellers and brokers.
