The government of President Daniel Noboa, who has vowed to crack down on crime, attributes the clashes to gangs vying for territory and control.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"don-t-shoot\" class=\"p2\">\u2018Don\u2019t shoot\u2019<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\">Videos released by the police show heavily armed officers entering the prison to the sound of explosions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cI\u2019m a police officer!\u201d a man can be heard shouting from inside a cell. Another voice can be heard pleading: \u201cPlease don\u2019t shoot!\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">The dead inmates belonged to the rival Los Choneros and Los Lobos gangs, two of the biggest drug-trafficking groups in Ecuador, which were designated as \u201cforeign terrorist organizations\u201d by the United States earlier this month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Organised crime has transformed Ecuador, a country of about 17 million, into one of the most violent nations in the world.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"internal-armed-conflict\" class=\"p1\">\u2018Internal armed conflict\u2019<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\">Nestled between the globe\u2019s top two cocaine exporters \u2013 Colombia and Peru \u2013 Ecuador has seen violence spiral in recent years as rival gangs with ties to Mexican and Colombian cartels vie for control.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">More than 70 percent of all cocaine produced in the world now passes through Ecuador\u2019s ports, according to government data.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Gang wars have largely played out inside the country\u2019s prisons, where some 500 inmates have been killed since February 2021, often in gruesome fashion, their bodies dismembered and burnt.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Ecuador\u2019s biggest prison massacre happened in 2021, when more than 100 inmates died in clashes in Guayaquil.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Prisoners went live on social media to broadcast the violence, showing decapitated and charred bodies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Last year, gang members took scores of prison guards hostage after the jailbreak of narcotics boss Jose Adolfo Macias, aka \u201cFito\u201d, while allies on the outside detonated bombs and held a television presenter at gunpoint live on air.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Noboa declared a \u201cstate of internal armed conflict\u201d and ordered that the military take control of the prisons. Last month, however, eight penitentiaries, including Machala, were returned to police control.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Fito \u2013 the boss of Los Choneros \u2013 was recaptured in June this year, more than a year after his escape.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">He had been serving a 34-year sentence since 2011 for involvement in organised crime, drug trafficking and murder, but continued pulling the strings of the criminal underworld from behind bars.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Videos emerged of Fito holding wild parties, some with fireworks, illustrating the lawlessness of Ecuador\u2019s prisons.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Los Choneros has ties to Mexico\u2019s Sinaloa cartel, Colombia\u2019s Gulf Clan \u2013 the world\u2019s largest cocaine exporter \u2013 and Balkan mafias, according to the Ecuadorian Organized Crime Observatory.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ecuador\u2019s prisons see another violent riot, with explosions and shootings in Machala.
