Both showcases run between Sept. 22-24 in the Basque city.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAmongst the Latin American showcase, prolific Mexican auteur Fernando Eimbcke is set to make the most of his stay in the Basque Country by presenting \u201cOlmo,\u201d backed by Brad Pitt\u2019s Plan B Ent, in Horizontes Latinos and his new project \u201cFlies\u201d as part of the WIP lineup. The Chilean duo of multidisciplinary stop-motion animators Le\u00f3n &amp; Coci\u00f1a follows \u201cThe Wolf House\u201d with fantasy \u201cThe Neverending Plague,\u201d joining two other sophomore features in Fernanda Tovar\u2019s \u201cSad Girls\u201d and Esteban Hoyos Garc\u00eda and Juan Miguel Gelacio Ram\u00edrez\u2019s \u201cWe Were No Longer Five.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe most noticeable absence this year is Argentina. For the first time in 15 years, the powerhouse South American country is nowhere to be seen in the WIP Latam selection, reflecting the also meagre offering in the festival\u2019s main program (there are only three Argentinian films in official selection this year: \u201c27 Nights,\u201d \u201cBel\u00e9n\u201d and \u201cThe Currents\u201d).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tExplorations of diaspora heavily permeate the European camp, with Massih Parsaei\u2019s \u201cLovers Sleep Alone\u201d trailing an Iranian man living in exile in Berlin, and Elif S\u00f6zen\u2019s \u201cVeha\u201d going the opposite direction by telling the story of a woman returning to her home country of Turkey after many years living abroad. Jonas Bak follows his 2021 debut \u201cWood and Water\u201d with the two-hander drama \u201cSomewhere Between Sleep,\u201d and German-Ukrainian director Tatjana Moutchnik makes her first feature outing with \u201cFebruary, Seven Days,\u201d investigating the Russian-Ukrainian tensions through the lens of a grieving family.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tParticipating projects at last year\u2019s WIP Latam have enjoyed a successful year, with Daniel Hendler\u2019s \u201cA Loose End\u201d recently playing Venice Spotlight and Iv\u00e1n Fund\u2019s \u201cThe Messager\u201d winning Berlin\u2019s prestigious Jury Prize. On the European side, Sarah Miro Fischer\u2019s \u201cThe Good Sister\u201d premiered in the Panorama section of Berlin, while Seyhmus Altun\u2019s \u201cAs We Breathe\u201d will compete in San Sebasti\u00e1n\u2019s New Directors sidebar.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tProjects at WIP Europe are all in the running for the category\u2019s Industry Award worth \u20ac10,000 ($11,700), while the WIP Latam offers the meatier Egeda Platino Industria Award worth \u20ac30,000 ($35,200).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tBelow, we look at the eight titles across the festival\u2019s two WIP lineups:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<strong>WIP Latam<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<strong>\u201cWe Were No Longer Five\u201d (\u201cA la hora de poner la mesa ya no \u00e9ramos cinco\u201d), dir. Esteban Hoyos Garc\u00eda, Juan Miguel Gelacio Ram\u00edrez \u2013 Colombia, USA<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<em>(Selva Producciones, Chicamocha Films, Andante Producciones, Redline Enterprises)<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe Colombian directing duo is back to San Sebasti\u00e1n\u2019s WIP Latam two years after their debut \u201cSelva\/Jungla.\u201d Their sophomore feature is about a mother who has lost track of her son in armed conflict. Losing hope with institutions, she turns to a group of women who tell her about a mysterious village where you can ask a dead person for a favor, setting her out on a journey in search of answers that blur the lines between the living and the dead. Stars \u201cBirds of Passage\u201d actor Carmi\u00f1a Mart\u00ednez.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<strong>\u201cSad Girls\u201d (\u201cChicas Tristes\u201d), dir. Fernanda Tovar \u2013 Mexico, Spain, France<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<em>(Colectivo Colmena, Martinishot Films, Potenza Producciones, Promenades Films)<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tTovar\u2019s short film \u201cMi edad, la tuya y la edad del mundo\u201d screened at Cannes\u2019 Critics\u2019 Week in 2022 and received a special mention at the Morelia Festival. Her feature debut, \u201cSad Girls\u201d analyzes the changing relationship between the two best swimmers in their team and their friends after an incident at a party. One wants to keep quiet, the other wants revenge. Their friendship, previously unbreakable, will be put to the test as never before. The project marks Colectivo Colmena\u2019s first international co-production.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<strong>\u201cThe Neverending Plague\u201d (\u201cLa plaga sin fin\u201d), dir. Joaqu\u00edn Coci\u00f1a Varas, Crist\u00f3bal Le\u00f3n Dooner \u2013 Chile, The Netherlands, Uruguay, Germany, France<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<em>(Le\u00f3n &amp; Coci\u00f1a Films, Globo Rojo Films, Vikings Films, Montelona, Autentika Films, Premium Films)<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe duo known as Le\u00f3n &amp; Coci\u00f1a previously won the best short film award at Venice Horizons for \u201cLos Huesos\u201d and Berlin\u2019s Caligari Award for their debut \u201cThe Wolf House.\u201d Their sophomore effort is a fantasy following Princess Diana, who falls in love with young nomad Lalo against her father\u2019s wishes. Desperate, she embarks on a journey in search of love. Stars Antonia Giesen (\u201cLa Jauria\u201d) and Andrew Bargsted (\u201cMy Brothers Dream Awake\u201d).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<strong>\u201cFlies\u201d (\u201cMoscas\u201d), dir. Fernando Eimbcke \u2013 Mexico<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<em>(Kinotitl\u00e1n, Teorema)<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe next film by renowned Mexican director Eimbcke (\u201cOlmo,\u201d \u201cDuck Season\u201d) is produced by Michel Franco\u2019s Teorema and stars \u201cTotem\u201d breakout Teresita S\u00e1nchez. The actor plays Olga, whose dire financial situation sees her subletting a room in her flat to Tulio, whose wife is hospitalized across the road. It follows Iman, a young man living in exile in Berlin after leaving Iran and cutting ties with his family. A lonely drifter, Iman\u2019s only relationship is a sexual affair with Andr\u00e9. A surprise visit from his cousin comes to disrupt the man\u2019s routine, bringing back suppressed memories of a long-gone past.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<strong>\u201cFebruary, Seven Days\u201d (\u201cSieben tage februar\u201d), dir. Tatjana Moutchnik \u2013 Germany, Austria<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<em>(Wood Water Films, Wega Film)<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe feature debut of German-Ukrainian director Tatjana Moutchnik (\u201cA Veteran\u2019s Destiny,\u201d\u00a0 \u201cBear Hill Path\u201d) takes place in Germany in 2022, where two Ukrainian brothers reunite after years apart to mourn their recently deceased mother. While the family debates on what is the most culturally appropriate mourning ritual, Russia begins its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, turning their lives upside down. Veteran Austrian producer Veit Heiduschka (\u201cAmour\u201d) is one of the film\u2019s producers under his Wega Film banner.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<strong>\u201cSomewhere Between Sleep,\u201d dir. His sophomore feature reunites him with mother Anke Bak, who starred in his first outing. In \u201cSomewhere Between Sleep,\u201d Anke meets Lisa by chance on a cold day as they both consider leaving their small Black Forest town.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<strong>\u201cVeha,\u201d dir.
