{"id":20680,"date":"2025-09-11T23:52:14","date_gmt":"2025-09-11T23:52:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/naijaglobalnews.org\/?p=20680"},"modified":"2025-09-11T23:52:14","modified_gmt":"2025-09-11T23:52:14","slug":"judge-allows-trump-to-cut-more-than-1bn-in-national-science-foundation-grants-trump-administration","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/naijaglobalnews.org\/?p=20680","title":{"rendered":"Judge allows Trump to cut more than $1bn in National Science Foundation grants | Trump administration"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The Trump administration can go ahead and purge more than 1,600 research grants issued by National Science Foundation (NSF) worth more than $1bn, after a judge declined to grant a preliminary injunction in a case brought by a coalition of organizations representing thousands of scientists.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The NSF is the premier federal investor in basic and cutting-edge science and engineering, which until Trump\u2019s second term enjoyed bipartisan support, with the agency\u2019s independent review process revered globally as the gold standard.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Shortly after the president\u2019s inauguration, the so-called \u201cdepartment of government efficiency\u201d (Doge) led by the billionaire Trump donor Elon Musk was given free rein to overhaul the NSF to comply with what the administration said were its \u201cchanging priorities\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Doge inflicted widespread and chaotic cuts to NSF staff, programs and research grants \u2013 particularly targeting grants that complied with congressional mandates to improve participation by women, people of color and people with disabilities in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (Stem).<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The congressional push to improve diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) in science and engineering was designed to nurture and attract untapped talent in marginalized communities, in order to boost American innovation, the economy and national defense.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">A legal challenge seeking to stop the NSF grant terminations was filed in June by groups including the American Association of Physics Teachers, American Association of Colleges and Universities, Women in Engineering Pro-Active Network, and United Auto Workers \u2013 which represents graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, faculty and university staff working on campuses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The groups argued that the sudden change in policy and mass terminations at the NSF were arbitrary and capricious, violating the Administrative Procedure Act (APA), the separation of powers and due process.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">On Wednesday evening, the district court of the District of Columbia ruled against the scientists and declined to halt the cuts while the case proceeds through the courts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThe Court finds that it likely lacks jurisdiction over Plaintiffs\u2019 retrospective APA claims \u2026 [and] Plaintiffs have failed to show irreparable harm flowing from their prospective APA claims and have not shown a likelihood of success on the merits of their constitutional claims,\u201d the court ruled.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In a statement, the coalition said: \u201cWhile we are deeply disappointed in the court\u2019s decision to allow the termination of grants to stand while we argue this case on the merits, we are as united and committed as ever to ultimately winning this case and protecting these important NSF grants.<\/p>\n<p>skip past newsletter promotion<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-rsfwa\">Sign up to <span>This Week in Trumpland<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1xjndtj\">A deep dive into the policies, controversies and oddities surrounding the Trump administration<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"dcr-1eusqlu\"><strong>Privacy Notice: <\/strong>Newsletters may contain information about charities, online ads, and content funded by outside parties.
