While she\u2019s close to her granddaughter Duda (Ariane Aparecida), who works at a gun shop and aspires to migrate to the U.S., her relationship with her daughter Deborah (Naruna Costa), who\u2019s waiting for her boyfriend to be released from prison, is rather strained.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe family drama is produced by Sara Silveira of Dezenove Som e Imagens, one of Brazil\u2019s most prominent producers, behind such acclaimed hits as Gomes\u2019 breakout Cannes-selected debut \u201cCinema, Aspirins and Vultures,\u201d which represented Brazil at the Oscars in 2007, Berlinale main competition entry \u201cAll the Dead Ones\u201d by Caetano Gotardo and Marco Dutra and \u201cCidade; Campo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tSaid The Open Reel\u2019s Cosimo Santoro: \u201cI immersed myself in the stories of Dolores, her daughter Deborah, and her granddaughter Duda: three women fighting to realize their dream of a better life, no matter the cost.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI\u2019ve been following Marcelo Gomes\u2019s films for years; I really enjoy them. I\u2019m also delighted to be working again with producer Sara Silveria, with whom we collaborated on the film \u2018Cidade; Campo,\u2019 directed by Juliana Rojas and awarded at the Berlinale,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe trailer opens on Dolores listening to her horoscope while powdering her face, then it cuts to scenes of her daughter and granddaughter, the latter as she hones her shooting skills.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cDolores is a woman brimming with charms and contradictions, facing the challenges of old age and betting on an all-or-nothing gamble. Despite a harsh routine in S\u00e3o Paulo\u2019s periphery, Dolores refuses to stop dreaming of a better life. That\u2019s her act of rebellion,\u201d explained Gomes, who co-wrote the final screenplay with Escobar.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cOver the years, we built a friendship and a partnership that was born, first and foremost, from the desire to make cinema. To talk about people, imagine feelings, invent other paths. It seems to me that when two really want to make a film together, the work becomes a space of creation, of nourishment\u2014in spite of any differences\u2014of learning. I think, before anything else, we have a lot of respect for each other, for our work, for Chico\u2019s work, for cinema,\u201d said Escobar.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThe three generations, however, must adjust their dreams to transform the world together. There\u2019s no solitary transformation. That was very important for us\u2014the idea of dialectics in the film,\u201d they said, adding: \u201cOne of the most compelling aspects of \u2018Dolores\u2019 is how the film is directly tied to our present, addressing issues like gambling addiction, firearm sales and the dream of immigration to the U.S.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe film is intended to complete Teixeira\u2019s acclaimed \u201cTrilogy of Affections,\u201d which began with \u201cAlice\u2019s House\u201d (2007), followed by \u201cAbsence\u201d (\u201cAus\u00eancia\u201d) (2014).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe casting choices are also a tribute to Teixeria, featuring not only Ribas but also Gilda Nomacce as Dolores\u2019s best friend and Matheus Fagundes as Duda\u2019s boyfriend, both leads in \u201cAbsence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cDolores\u201d is backed by the internationalization program Brasil no Mundo, Projeto Paradiso and S\u00e3o Paulo film-TV entity, Spcine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tProduction is led by Silveira, Eliane Bandeira and Maria Ionescu. Misti Filmes is an associate producer while GT Produ\u00e7\u00f5es is a co-producer.
