\n\tThe 21st Zurich Film Festival will honor U.S. director and screenwriter Noah Baumbach with its A Tribute To \u2026 Award for his body of work. The award will be presented to him on Sept. 26 during the gala premiere of his new film \u201cJay Kelly\u201d at Zurich\u2019s Kongresshaus. In addition, Baumbach will hold a public masterclass.<\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cWith Noah Baumbach, we are honoring an auteur who has shaped U.S. cinema for decades with his subtle insight into human relationships and his precise powers of observation,\u201d said Christian Jungen, Zurich\u2019s festival director. \u201c\u2019Jay Kelly\u2019 is, in my opinion, one of the outstanding films of the year and one of those works that, looking back, will be regarded as a masterpiece.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\tBaumbach has been nominated for an Academy Award four times. In 2006, he was nominated for original screenplay for \u201cThe Squid and the Whale.\u201d In 2020, \u201cMarriage Story\u201d received six nominations, including best picture for Baumbach and David Heyman, and original screenplay for Baumbach, with Laura Dern winning the Oscar for supporting actress. In 2024, Baumbach was nominated for adapted screenplay for \u201cBarbie,\u201d shared with Greta Gerwig.<\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cTime and again, Baumbach succeeds in blending intimate everyday stories with existential questions\u2014brought to life by outstanding actors such as Scarlett Johansson, Adam Driver, Nicole Kidman, Ben Stiller, Adam Sandler, Dustin Hoffman and Greta Gerwig,\u201d the festival said.<\/p>\n
\n\tHis new film remains true to the \u201ccom\u00e9die humaine,\u201d the event said. \u201cJay Kelly\u201d is a satire on the Hollywood star circus. George Clooney plays a famous movie actor, Jay Kelly, as he embarks on a journey of self-discovery confronting both his past and present, accompanied by his devoted manager Ron (Adam Sandler). The film is considered one of the major Oscar contenders of the season. \u201cPoignant and humor-filled, epic and intimate, \u2018Jay Kelly\u2019 is pitched at the intersection of life\u2019s regrets and notable glories,\u201d the fest said.<\/p>\n
\n\tBaumbach\u2019s films also include \u201cFrances Ha,\u201d \u201cWhite Noise,\u201d \u201cThe Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected),\u201d \u201cWhile We\u2019re Young,\u201d \u201cMistress America,\u201d \u201cGreenberg,\u201d \u201cMargot at the Wedding,\u201d \u201cKicking and Screaming\u201d and the documentary \u201cDe Palma.\u201d He co-wrote \u201cFantastic Mr. Fox\u201d and \u201cThe Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou\u201d with Wes Anderson.<\/p>\n
