\n\tRegrets, he has a few, Guillermo del Toro told the Toronto Film Festival on Sunday night. The good thing, though, those regrets are creative fodder for the Oscar-winning filmmaker\u2019s next movies. \u201cI\u2019m 60 now. So I\u2019ve gone from asking who I am as a father and son to regret. I\u2019m in the regret decade. Expect a lot of regret,\u201d the horrormeister said during a Q&A after a North American premiere of Frankenstein<\/em> at the Royal Alexandra Theater in Toronto.<\/p>\n \n\tSpeaking specifically about adapting Mary Shelley\u2019s classic 1818 gothic novel Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus<\/em> \u2014 with Dr. Frankenstein played by\u00a0Oscar Isaac\u00a0in the adaptation and Jacob Elordi the creature he gives birth to \u2014 del Toro said he aimed to craft a story about father and son issues. Then he eventually realized his narrative included his own experiences as both a son and a father.<\/p>\n \n\t\u201cI had to realize that, in the course of being a son, I became a father. \u00a0And then it became about me as a father too,\u201d del Toro told the TIFF premiere audience about the movie he directed from his own screenplay.<\/p>\n \t\t\t\t\tGuillermo del Toro and Oscar Isaac on the set of Frankenstein<\/span><\/p>\n \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tKen Woroner\/Netflix<\/p>\n \n\tWider themes the director also discussed included \u201cwhat does it mean to be human in a time of inhumanity, war and in a moment of doubt as a race. That was true back then, and it\u2019s true right now,\u201d he added about the contrast between Shelley in her Romantic-era novel questioning scientific ethics and alienation after the Enlightenment, and our own tumultuous time of rapid economic and climate change.<\/p>\n \n\t\u201cThe Romantics were reacting with emotion after the Age of Enlightenment. They were basically punks, they were iconoclastic and broke the rules of society,\u201d he argued. \u201cWe are there again. Emotion is the new punk. Emotion, we\u2019re afraid of showing it. We\u2019re afraid of seeing it. We\u2019re in such a state of separation within ourselves. That\u2019s the only thing that will save us, to have empathy and emotion,\u201d del Toro added.<\/p>\n \n\tHaving completed his latest gothic epic, del Toro teased his next projects. \u201cThis sort of closes a huge episode in my life,\u201d he said of completing Frankenstein<\/em>, a passion project that had been virtually a lifetime in the making.<\/p>\n \t\t\t\t\tOscar Isaac as Victor Frankenstein in \u201cFrankenstein\u201d directed by Guillermo del Toro.<\/span><\/p>\n \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tKen Woroner\/Netflix<\/p>\n \n\tHis creative slate includes Fury,<\/em> an upcoming feature reuniting him with Isaac that appears to center on a murderous dinner where guests get popped off between courses. \u201cIt\u2019s going back to the thriller aspects of\u00a0Nightmare Alley<\/em>. It\u2019s very cruel, very violent,\u201d del Toro warned. The veteran of creature features is also at work on an \u201cepic\u201d stop-motion movie. <\/p>\n \n\tAfter its tour of the festival circuit, Frankenstein <\/em>is headed for a limited theatrical release on Oct. 17.
