One government source said \u201cnothing is off the table\u201d for Mahmood as she assumes her new brief, which puts her in charge of borders and asylum policy. She has previously signalled a willingness to look at reform of the European convention of human rights within domestic law.<\/p>\n
It comes after the prime minister carried out a major reshuffle including wide-ranging changes at the Home Office as he seeks to tighten his grip on immigration and draw a line under Angela Rayner\u2019s resignation.<\/p>\n
The chief secretary to the prime minister, Darren Jones, earlier denied that the government was in crisis and insisted Starmer now has the \u201cstrongest team\u201d in place around the cabinet table following Rayner\u2019s departure.<\/p>\n
He ruled out the prospect of an early election amid opposition claims that the upheaval could open splits within Labour and collapse the prime minister\u2019s authority.<\/p>\n
Speaking to broadcasters on Saturday, Jones dismissed suggestions that the rejig could delay the Starmer\u2019s self-described \u201cphase two\u201d of government by moving senior figures to unfamiliar briefs.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s not instability insofar as the outcomes that we\u2019re delivering are the same,\u201d Jones, who is also the newly appointed chancellor of the duchy of Lancaster, told BBC Breakfast.<\/p>\n
